Hens Quit Laying

Lots of people supplement light during the winter to try to get more eggs. I don't do it myself, since I allow my hens to take a break as their bodies dictate.

If it's important to you that they lay, a very experienced chicken keeper told me that supplemental light and/or supplemental food can help hens to lay right through winter. She said she feeds extra protein and greens.

I suppose those measures may not be enough for some hens, but I'm too new at this myself to have any better tips to share.

Black copper Marans are a utility chicken breed. Contrary to the sound of the word "utility" this means that they are neither good meat birds nor egg layers.

It seems that a lot of effort that went into developing this strain went into setting the color of the eggshells. Personally I am not into eating eggshells, I much prefer eating what's inside the eggshells. I guess that I'm just funny that way. Think about swapping your Marans out for a laying breed when the time comes to get replacement birds.
