i found my hen today with blood all over her and limping. i dont know what happend but she has a big slice in her side. could the tom have done it or something else.what can i do for her or can i do anything

Sorry to hear that! That seems to happen all too often with these bis free range birds. I guess she is free range? Could be a number of things depending where you live. We have wild hogs here in East Texas and they can slice like a knife with their tusks. How big is she? That happened to all of my neighbors turkeys over several months and we never found out what it was. Hog, Cyote, hawk, eagle?????? He took them to the vet and used antibiotics but still souldnt save them. Maybe someone here has had success treating wounds of this type.

Yes, the Tom probably did it. It recently happened to one of my hens. If it's really bad, I'd sew her up. A neighbor lady and I sewed mine up and she's doing fine. When we sewed her, we didn't stitch instead, we tied it up in knots about every 1/2". If we had tried to stitch it, we would of made a mess of it. Make sure you clean the wound up with some peroxide but after the wound is clean don't use any more peroxide. I used an antibiotic spray I bought for poison ivy and small cuts. I was amazed at how fast she healed up considering the cut was about 6" long and 3" to 4" wide.
Warm soapy water can be used instead of peroxide because it's less painful. Peroxide can burn like h... on a large open wound.

Was it just the skin cut open? The ones I have seen here were deep into the brest or legs. Like almost to the brest bone!

I think I'd use betadine rather than peroxide, betadine doesn't kill tissue like peroxide can. FWIW. The injury sounds like what I could envision a tom doing to a hen during mating.

If you stitch it be careful that you do not completely close the wound. It needs to be able to seep. There is a good chance of infection and the wound need to be able to drain in order to fight that.

No it was a deep wound. It happens when they breed. Actually, I thought she would die it was so bad but, they are some tuff buggers.

shes a midget white they run in a pen with a pair of bourbons i think he tried getting her and did it scince hes twice her size its a big gash right above her leg under wing i sprayed it with iodine and she seems to be cleaning it and gave her some antibiotic and put her up by herself

yes, the tom did it , scalet oil for her back and pull her away from all toms and get her a saddle or make one or keep her away from all toms!! today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry about your hen tom!!!!

I would get a hold of some Blue Coat to apply to the wound. Make sure the feathers are out of the way if possible. Blue coat will act as a scab to keep bacteria out of it.

Blue Coat is available in most farm ranch type stores, you may have to look were they keep things for Horses.
