Hens squawking over nest.

I have the same drama with a buff orp and a barred rock.... One day I was in another coop cleaning and I could hear them really going at it... They were so noisy I thought they were two roos!!! I went in ready to break up some testosterone induced brawl and it was the two... (I use the term loosely)... ladies. I had a fit...the buff was on the nest and the BR refused to just let it go and use another one. Her comb was bleeding and the Buff wasn't about to give an inch. I threw them both out and in 5 minutes had the same situation. The BR finally gave up... but took a good pounding just trying to prove a point! Boy can those hennies get testy on their nests!

That's why we went to a community nest last year. They were already climbing on top of each other to lay, after fussing and complaining for a good long while. Now they can lay in the same spot at the same time, without all the drama. They get along better, too. That might eliminate some of the noise for you.

I have the same problem... three hens, two nest boxes but everyone uses the same one. I have seen two girls in there at the same time before.

The thing that strikes me as really odd... anyone have any thoughts on this?

When my BR is laying, my aus (who hasn't started laying yet) will stand outside the nest box watching closely and make all sorts of noise. What the heck is THAT??

Boy have I fussed at them and of course they said"It wasn't me" If this wasn't the response I get from everyone every time, I might have beleived them.

Looks like I get to say "I'm sorry"

I had no idea chickens would be so fooled by the fake eggs as to steal them. That is too funny.

Thanks for the idea. We're going to try this because today they were carrying on for about 15 - 20 minutes non-stop. I heard them from our front yard so I know the neighbors aren't having any problem hearing them
