Hens to Roosters

I have 3 roosters and have never had a problem with them even when I only had one hen. Mine free range from dawn to dusk, so I'm sure that helps the situation. Plus they were raised together from day one. I had 8 newborns this year with 2 of them being roos. We'll see how it goes.

What breed? If they're Cochins or Brahmas or Dorkings you probably could, but most breeds probably not. However, in my own flock I've noticed that males that grow up together will often get along just fine as adults so long as there is enough space or they're allowed to free range.

I have one flock that has 4 roosters with 14 girls. I watch carefully for over mating. It hasn't happened. The roosters are under a year old, so technically, they are cockerels.

One of the guys has two girlfriends that he mates with. No one else is allowed to touch them. Period. If his girls won't put out, then he will try to other girls and his girls immediately put out. Immediately.

Another guy has two girlfriends. He protects them fiercely. Sometimes will try to do other girls.

The other two cockerels have 10 girls between them.

Not all boys are horny 24/7.

I have a cockerel with a girlfriend. They mate maybe once a day. He doesn't have access to any other girls. He's just not too horny.

It COULD work - but you have to be diligent about watching for over mating. From about 4 months to 12 months is the "puberty" time for the boys.

Thanks for the answers. Two of the roosters grew up together the other 1 is older and I haven't introduced them to each other yet. The older one is a silkie he is very friendly and docil. The younger ones are a brown leghorn and a lakenvelder.
