Hens walking around with their (shoulders, wings out)

Yes, your girl looks warm. Holding the wings out allows excess heat to escape the body & helps with temp regulation. They do it all of the time.

It may be silly to say, but for my girls I have a set of fans in one of their coop windows. It doesn't necessarily cool them on a hot day if they
choose to be indoors for any period of time, but it does bring in cooler air from the outside & circulate it. I have also been known to fan their door in the cooler part of the evening if it's been a particularly hot, humid day (because I love them like crazy!) Short of that, I give them lots of fresh, cold water to drink, cold lettuce, melon, etc as treats. They always have a well shaded run & plenty of dirt to dig into.

When they can dig down, they can get to cooler earth and cover themselves with dirt, which they love. Perhaps use a pitchfork to loosen//turn over their dirt?

By the way, I love your Barred Rock!

Well you live close to me so I’m sure that’s the case then. I’ll have to figure out a way to keep them cooler. Maybe a misting system!
Yeah it’s getting pretty hot already but it’s going to way more hot where you are. More of a dry heat. I don’t which is worse. Gotta love California in the summer time.

She is hot
No panting, the high here today was 84. They are under a tree and full shade from the house all day, they aren’t kept in a cage, if hot is the case how should I attempt to keep them cooler? I am nervous about the heat because it will be in the 100s this summer.
You can put ice in their water dish. Cold fruits would be :drool
those chickens are hot. To try to keep them cool have a cool source of water near them so they can drink when they get dehydrated.
Agreed

Thank you, I love her too! We have had her for 2 months. That’s a good idea to turn the dirt.

Just as a side note here , Your chicken looks to have leg mites as well. :frow
Yes we have had her for two months. Not knowing anything about chickens, I thought she just had big legs. we have been putting de in the coop and in the place where they like to dirt bath. It’s gotten better but it’s not gone yet, I’ve heard you can put vasoline on the legs?

DE isnt going to treat leg mites. Matter of fact depends on who you ask if its even good for them or not. I personally never used it. Vaseline is a good start. It will smother them but needs to be reapply often. Im not sure what other peeps use ??

They will be ok, I'm north of you and it's getting warm here to. It's very normal and as long as they have shade and water they should be fine. I'm going on 4 years with chickens and they do tolerate the 100+ pretty well. They won't be as active in the high heat and some might stop laying for a few days after a really high day but cool treats like frozen veggies and watermelon are a favorite. And a mister on one side of their run helps, make sure its not over a main area they don't like to be wet they should be able to move toward and away from the mister as needed it's more to cool the area then three birds themselves
