Her comb and wattles are purply instead of red! she's sick

K. thank you.

I should have asked for the penicillin when I was there. I asked what antibiotics they had and they said 2 diff ones. and from what I could find online, the purple comb was from respiratory infection so thats why I got the tetracyclin... nobody but you will post in my threads which is very discouraging and making me feel like nobody cares....so I had to make some sort of decision on my own today. IDK what else to do. I can try to find/get some penicillin tomorrow... but I'm also dealing with 2 cranky sick children besides this and I can't keep up with everyone. I'm doing my best.

maybe an egg did break inside. I dont know for sure though. she's just really purple in the face/comb.

poor girl.

The purple can be from resp. but in your case I think it's more likely that it started from the pressure of the stuck egg and now from the infection she has because of it breaking. Don't feel bad about nobody else posting on your thread, lots of times people won't if they don't know about something or don't have anything to add, it doesn't mean no one else cares. I'm the queen of the dead thread (or at least one of them) so you're for sure not alone there!

Sorry about your kiddo's, that always makes it tough on everybody. Don't go beating yourself up about things, you can only do what you can do and it sure sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now.

I can help you with your sick kids but as a newer chicken owner w/o ever having heath issues for them I wouldn't knoiw where to begin helping. i hope your poor bird gets better,I would add healing foods into her diet as treats if she will eat.

The advice from kittymomma has been spot on, as far as I can see. You're doing a good job so far. Not too many of us have had to deal with this, and even fewer have done so successfully. That's probably why you haven't had a lot of response.

Hang in there & let us know how it goes

If she has infection/fluid buildup in her abdomen, it's pressing on her organs and causing her heart to work way too hard, causing the purple color. Penicillin is a shot in the dark, but it worked twice for one of my hens. She is in her third time dealing with this and she will pass on. It has no permanent solution, this internal laying thing, if that's what it is. She probably broke an egg inside, as was mentioned before. I've had hens die of internal laying, but before I realized that, one in particular had the same symptoms as yours. Below is a pic of what was removed from her oviduct after her death....Graphic pics, so if you don't want to see....

Salpingitis is sometimes caused in high production breeds (the most common hatchery breeds) when the cloaca becomes "loose" and sucks feces back into the oviduct, causing an ecoli infection. It builds up, the infection and egg material, and eventually the bird begins to lose weight and become weak. Been there too many times. No cure, no prevention. Sometimes, egg yolk gets into the abdominal cavity and causes infection, too.

GRAPHIC PIC BELOW:

I removed this from the oviduct of one hen (I've lost about six to internal laying and about to lose two more)

wow. thank you all for responding. I really appreciate it.

she's still hanging on this morning but does not look good at all. DH got her to drink he said.

I really don't think she's going to make it. I can try and get some penicillin but she looks just, worse.

If she were internally laying or if an egg broke, that would explain the yellow yolky colored poop coming out I think. poor gal. she is the chicken who likes to follow me around all the time. she is the "food hog". she's kind of the mean one too. she likes to peck at my legs.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this. I have 3 Buff Orp hens also, and one had a purplish comb a few months ago but not all these other symptoms. In my case, it turned out to be Feather Lice. I had never seen any bugs on my chickens, but when she looked sluggish and purple, I did a full inspection of her. When I lifted her wing I saw the little brownish bugs. I treated her and everyone else with Sevin Dust and she got better.

You should check for bugs under the wings just to be sure, but with the yellow stuff coming out, it sounds more like a broken egg/eggbound/infection. I have no experience with that, but sounds like Pennicillin would be the way to go. It might help. Again, I'm so sorry, I know how sad and frustrating it can be to try to treat a sick chicken.

she is right now up and drinking a ton again. I wonder if getting the penicillin will help.

I didn't check for bugs. maybe I should have. I dont know if I'm going to mess with her right now as she is drinking. But if I get ahold of some penicillin and have to administer that then I'll go ahead and check for bugs at the same time. thank you for the idea! or maybe I should check before heading out so I wouldn't have to go out twice... hmmmmmmmmm.. I just hate to mess with her a lot where she isn't feeling well.
