I signed up today due to something happening that left me seeking bird advice.

I don't own birds (except my parrot and there's no issues there)

I do own cats, and alas cats hunt...and that's why I'm here.

I'm ridiculously obsessed with birds and have hand reared many, over the years... but this time it is a little different. A friend suggested this place, so I thought I'd give it a try.

We joke and say that we have a cat sanctuary and a chicken farm combo. ;) It can definitely work! Our outside cats are either abandoned strays or those who never were adopted (because they're female). They're socialized and are fed well. They love to watch the girls and hunt for mice, moles/voles, and snakes. And also sneak in to eat the leftover scratch on the chicknic tables. Haha!

Welcome to BYC! I’ve got cats and chickens, and my cats actively hunt rodents and small animals, so it can be done! My older chickens are allowed to be around the cats, and my cats avoid them. It’s actually kinda funny how the cats are scared of the chickens! I have around six working outdoor cats that are around my 13 hens.
My cats are totally fine with all my birds I do have. I had reared a starling when it fell out of a nest and the mother never came back, and I had to hand rear a crow last year as well that was injured, sadly I did make a post on her after this one, my cats left me with pigeon eggs 😲 and I'm clueless with these guys.

But I have a parrot who my cats adore and even accept, and when I did have chickens my cats would always watch over them but never let them come to harm
