here's our coop so far . . .

Quote:
We took all precautions to keep rodents out - buried galvanized steel 9 inches down, closed all gaps . . . the plan is that the henhouse is completely open on the end that connects to the run, for ventilation etc. so I can't lock them in at night (technically they'll be locked in all the time). I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that whatever rodents are attracted are unable to get in, but if it starts to be a problem I'll move it.
Thanks for bringing this up - I hadn't thought about it quite this way.

Well, it's (mostly) done!!! We need to put the finishing touches on the henhouse roof, but it's done enough that we moved the girls into it Sunday night. Then of course it had to rain Monday and today

but the girls seem to be taking it in stride.

I'm especially glad that John and I finished it without killing one another!

Now if I could only convince the girls to use the roost John built for them - they seem to prefer the ledge that leads out to the run, but I hope they'll figure it out soon. In any event, I think they're happy to not be living in a cardboard box any longer.

WOW what a fancy coop! Looks wonderful! And those chickens are adorable...I remember moving mine to their coop

It was a sad sad day for me! I felt terrible.

What a great coop. I love your idea for the cover on the waterer. I can't wait to try it. I have the same waterer and the chickens are always standing on it, knocking them over, etc...

Just to put a capper on this thread - here's the final final version of the coop:

The roof is on (did it all by mahself, thankyouverymuch) and the waterer is plumbed in better. Only the nest box remains to be finished, but that will mount on the back wall from the outside. The girls seem pretty happy with it (everything's already been pooped on, so I guess it's ok with them).

I want to thank everyone on BYC for all the suggestions and help (and other coop pages I stole ideas from). We couldn't have done it without everyone else here. Best forum I've joined!

Gosh it's been a long time since I took a look at this thread. Things have changed, a bit, but mostly the coop is the same and working just as I intended. The most major update is that about four years ago I led the drive to get backyard hens legalized here in Pasadena, and my first official act as a legal chicken keeper was to raise the roof on my run, so I can stand and hold my head up high in my own chicken coop! I'll have to post some updated pictures.
