Heres what we built

Looks great, i would love to have the same thing. In pic 3 is someone looking out the screen or is your110 year old barn a little haunted?

I meant # 4

Really fine work and great use of existing materials. Matches and compliments existing structure and is the way I would want it. One thing I noticed was that you have a row of nests that are a bit higher than roosts. Was wondering if chooks sleep/poop in them or are they staying out of them overnight? They will always try to reach highest place in coop to sleep.

Thanks to all for the compliments and kind words. I will try to address a couple of the questions posed.
We are using hay in the deep litter method and I add 3 flakes of hay a week over the top of the existing bedding. I have been emptying the whole thing twice a month or so. Now that we are in the warmer months, the birds are spending most of the night outside in the run up high in the rafters.

In regards to the question about if the chooks are overnighting in the boxes,, great question! But no, I haven't had one yet other than some timid newer pullets that were still trying to find their place in the pecking order. I do have much higher roosts above the nesting boxes but out of the frame in the pics.

Again, thanks for all the compliments we are pretty proud of it.

Thank you for posting such excellent pictures of the process. This helps us out a lot- I wasn't able to articulate just how I wanted the run built- your pictures show it perfectly! I'm so glad you put sand in the run as well, my fiance was having trouble seeing why it is such a good idea. Also, I love the idea of laying down hardware cloth before the sand instead of digging miles of trenches

My husband is an architect. He said you did a dam find job. Both barn and coop should be around for another 100.
