here's why we shouldn't put quail and chickens together...update #3

yup.....all my little birdies are still doing ok....well, except for the broilers i just bought, but that's another story!

I'm bumping this cause i have a question. First off- I'm sorry you're going through this! I haven't had much of a chance for reading lately but caught this thread today.

My question is: I'm getting a few laying hens in a couple of weeks. I'm planning on cleaning out a hutch I'm currently using for coturnix and putting them in there along with a little fenced in area in the barn for them to move around in and scratch over the winter. Their pen will be in the same barn as the quail but not in the same area. The quail have their own "stall" with pens in it.

Will I be ok handling them like this as long as I take care of the quail first and the chickens second? I also have pigeons so I'm assuming once again take care of the pigeons before the chickens? Kristi

Kristi I Think That Would Work Fine... Just Use Handwashing To Keep From "sharing Bugs" Between The Different Speces Of Birds.... And Dont Share Any Implements (feeders, Brooders, Water Fonts) Used In Their Care Without Sanitizing Them (1 Cup Of Household Bleach Per 5 Gal. Bucket X 30 Min Soak And Allow To Air Dry)

I Have Used This For A Few Years Now And Havent Had Any Problems Since I Made It Routine Practice Here....

Ok thank you! I was hoping it would work out ok. Been waiting for chickens for quite awhile now and have a friend who wants to do a swap- few chickens for few training quail. I'll have to tell him the same things though since he'll be keeping both. Kristi

BTW. I got my chickens. No one told me they can FLY!!! Guess I always figured bigger laying hens couldn't or wouldn't fly- boy I was wrong!! $200 later and we NOW have them contained in a dog run. But their set-up is nice. The quail are mad I think- chickens are brand new and already have the better digs....

This was a very informative thread, thanks. I feel lucky to have, by chance, put my quail pens on the other end of the yard from the chicken pens. I will pay more attention to handwashing etc between handling birds and paraphernalia. I see a lot of people that have suspended quail cages on the side of the chicken coops or elsewhere in the chicken yard in the interest of space or so the chickens could eat the feed the quails waste. Looks like that may not be such a hot idea afterall.

ya this is a good thread... im getting quail on sat and with all the studying ive done this is the first ive heard of this... and ive seen a few pics of chickens and quail together on this site lol... so thanks... its always better to know than to find out the hard way...
