Heritage & Exhibition Turkey Thread

I will second that on Porter and Urch, excellent birds, they know well what they are doing, Duane also has really excellent RIRs.

I guess to go back to my original question, does anyone know or even have ideas about how the different Narragansett lines out there might be related?

With livestock, there is a breed registry so you know the background of animals and you can find relatives or unrelated mates if you need to... it's a shame there isn't any equivalent for poultry.... what concerns me, is that if the Narragansett population was so low in the late nineties, that is what they call a genetic "bottleneck" and means genetic diversity has gotten lower than it should be. That's why I'm interested in birds which can be traced back to a couple of different sources!

Duane has had his for over 30 years. Frank Reese JR has Norman Kardosh line from the early 1900's. Not sure about anyone elses. Some may tell you their source and others won't. Let us know what you find out.

The only whites in the SOP are White Holland and the Beltsville White. The commercial BB White is not in the SOP. It is a hybrid developed for the commercial industry. Most likely your judge used the White Holland or the Beltsville White Standard in judging them. It is possible they judged them as a commercial turkey. The Midget White is not in the SOP. However, the ALBC list their weights as Midget White toms average 13 lbs., hens average 8 lbs. Shape is the same for all turkeys per the SOP. The only differences is the color and weight. So the Midget White can be judged in shape/type by the Turkey Standard, by color using either the White Hollands or Beltsville, and by weight with the ALBC description. It is thought many are shown as a Beltsville, instead of a Midget White. The ETF would like to see the MW accepted in the Standard. Perhaps we could seek acceptance in the Bantam Standard? The first Bantam Turkey?

The commercial whites will never be accepted in the SOP. They must be able to reproduce naturally. The commercial BBW and BBB can not.

Wanna waite til spring & see if these babies breed on their own?
hens at maturity are about 12 pounds.
I am gonna say males are about 18..............

CL where did you get your midget whites from?

I have often wondered if anyone is working on the miniatures in other colors?

Anyone here know of them?

Beautiful birds on the Porter site. Unfortunately he doesn't ship to Virginia. Sigh.
