Heritage & Exhibition Turkey Thread

That would most likely be what will happen, it doesnt seem like there is needed 3 small white turkey breeds.

Of those MWs we have, I was just interested in what those traits are I mentioned, maturity size, clutches, maternal ability in hens etc.

That seems like a very delayed maturity, that alone would rule them out as a 'perfect homestead turkey'.

I lost interest in Mother Earth News quite a number of years ago, too many arm chair famer writers.

I am going to add a few Turkeys this spring, so looking over all options.

If you look at Steve of S&S, you can see pics of BSW and MW. I've looked and looked, to find no major differences between the two. I would like to see pics and comparison of the two side by side.

Wondering if I should get me some BSW's?

I just want a beautiful lawn ornament/pet. Along with helping to preserve a breed.

I am/was curious about them but am more interested in one of the varieties of the Palm turkeys, they seem to me to be a much better homestead Turkey then these. Plenty of time to think it over, but I am leaning towards the Red Palm.

You are right on in that ! I like Porters offering, and for sure will avoid any BB types, I lean towards the Red Palm or Sweetgrass, plenty of time to choose, but whatever I choose has to be a natural breeder. I will raise out the poults and select the best and the others to the freezer. Next year after I will have my own flock.

No, Bourbon Reds are bigger, much darker, and the Palms are around 20% smaller, most Toms mature to dress out around 20lbs. And the Palms have more markings to their pattern. Bourbon Reds are a great Turkey on their own, I just prefer the Palms and the variations, the Red Palm is one I like, and the Sweetgrass has Palm in it.

I hope to get Bourbon Reds from Porter's in the spring, can't wait to start with a great stock! I will order 15 poults, and keep the best 4 hens and 2 toms for breeding, will sell and/or eat the rest.
This is the tom that I used to have- He came from a local breeder.
