Anyone's heritage turkeys laying? I am seeing some listings at various auction sites for hatching eggs. Even some on BYC at https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=34

We have winter wheat planted this year. Also some rye is coming back up from last years planting. Should have plenty of winter pasture. We are feeding a few pumpkins that we collected from local businesses last week. All of the poultry are enjoying them.

Anything Heritage & Exhibition Turkey is up for discussion on this thread, so lets talk T-U-R-K-E-Y-!

Well, I have been on the fence between Porters Sweetgrass Turkeys, and their Red Palm so I have decided to order some of each, probably 10 of the Sweetgrass and five of the Red Palm. Either way I win. I do love the Royal Palm but also like the red better.

Just keep in mind if you plan on exhibiting turkeys, the American Poultry Association currently only recognizes the following varieties of Turkeys:

Black

Bourbon Red

Slate

Narragansett

White Holland

Bronze

Beltsville White

Royal Palm

Other varieties may be shown in exhibition, but can only win AOV: "All Other Variety" if a quality standard recognized variety is present.

The Turkey is a Heritage bird. Though some varieties may not be considered heritage, its nice to see any variety being raised and shown.

Thats not a problem for me as I wont be showing. I only want a homestead Turkey flock. If I was to show it would be the Royal Palm hands-down for me.

I went out & put a thick bed of new straw down all over the turkey pen...and looked the biggest Tom over.
he has drug his wingtips into the ground so much as to have eroded off a few tips about 1/2", leaving the shaft.
I am guessing that this happens alot with Toms, so I decided maybe to just trim the 1/2" bare feather shafts off with scissors...then clean them up, maybe conditioner.
So, was wondering if you have had this issue before, and how you dealt with it and how do judges react to wingtips such as I have described?
I am planning on washing the big boy today, in a low tub, held down by help, with a pressurized Hudson Sprayer with warm water & a tiny bit of Tide Det...just his tail tips & wing tips.

Any other pointers & tips from you all would be greatly appreciated.
