Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I'm not an expert on either breed but I would say white Plymouth Rocks maybe. Almost all whites are oversized though which I'm assuming *could* lead to more meat production. One thing I will say is mine were mean when I had them. Plus I had a buff Orpington breeder tell me he's had a few get nasty. Both are known to be cold hardy but I'm not sure about the heat. My HATCHEY orps layed rather crappily while my neighbors supposedly SQ hen layed lots of big brown eggs.
i have white Plymouth rocks. they lay like crazy cockerels ready to process by 14 weeks, my oldest male is 1lb over standard weight .my rocks have never been aggressive toward me can pick em up when ever needed. they can withstand the cold as well

Like most breeds, there will be differences in strains and of course, husbandry can play a major roll in production and meat.

Look like naked necks are getting some attention on this great thread. For me I like red NN.

White is also pretty on naked necks cause of the red necks they have but white stains easy and can turn yellow if you feed them corn.

Thanks for the information. The amount of soy our birds get is limited to the small bit of Layena used as a binder for their porridge. I'll have to check to see how much corn Layena uses, but we do feed cracked corn in the evenings. I scatter it on the floor of their houses to get them to stir up the bedding and of course to help keep them warm.

I never noticed any yellowing but then, I never looked for it. Thanks for the tip and any other words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. With holding corn will be one of a few changes we will make once we get get our SOP projects up and running...

Thanks again!

I feed everything here the same amounts of corn(atleast 50%) in all the rations I have 6 Columbian Rock boys all with varying amounts of yellowing/brassiness and I have one WR male that is on the same diet all are within a month of age the WR has no signs of brassiness anywhere pure white so someone will have to come up with a lot better than I've ever read on corn causing this as I'm personally experiencing the effects right before my eyes. I too think if most knew the exact amounts of corn in the popular/conveniently readily available on shelf feeds they would probly be amazed maybe even astonished.

Yes Jeff - The commercials guys don't tell you do they ?- the tag usually just states "GRAIN PRODUCTS"
So iI would guess that translation is what ever is cheapest that week that we can use and still get to the percent of protein stated.

It probably has something to do with genetics. Do white rocks carry a silver gene?

Exactly it is genetic related, autosomal red bleed though, not corn oils. WR are said to be recessive white covering barring(black) they were developed from sports of the BRs. There are/or may be some strains that are dominant White but not as common as recessive white.

yes the grain product more times than none is usually corn it is the cheapest out of the other popular ingredients (soy and alfalfa) as they are also way higher in protein percentages too sorta like buying regular unleaded or super premium gasolines LOL
