Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I've got a rooster so tough that when the red tail hawks swoop down to get the foo foo birds I keep as hen toilet paper, he will jump on one and mate it. Whole passel of barebacked redtails around these parts...the DNR are investigating the cause.

Bahahahaha Too Cute!!

We do want to raise the chicks ourselves. I would hatch eggs, but I don't want to be put in the position of trying to find homes for roosters or trying to get another female chick the same age as the others. We are also not going to show the birds.
Don't worry about extra roosters. They are easy to get rid of on craigslist.
Might take a couple of days for folks to find your ad, but they will come.
Best,
Karen

Yeah, my oldest was the same way when he came home from Afghan,,. Turns out he explained they never stop for anything when they are driving. Jus keep going because there might be an ambush if they did stop. Esp. donkeys. They would never stop for donkeys. Just blow right thru them and leave a red mist behind because the Taliban would strap explosives to them for an ambush. It took my son several months to slow down his driving.

Like others have said...you can order 15 Buckeyes from Cackle Hatchery. Not show birds but they are Buckeyes none the less.

If you order pullets, you are certainly going to get at least 2 cockerels. Give away or sell what you don't want or cant keep.

To most people, Buckeyes, White Rocks (on and on) all look alike. If you are allowed 6 then only show six at a time.

I know a lady in Baltimore MD, where only 4 dogs are allowed but she owns 12 standard poodles. only a very few close friends and neighbors know the actual number because ....just like Buckeyes.......

Just be reasonable and SMART about it...

From Cackle, you can order as few as 3--they have a city special.

A cock bird is useless as defense. He might make a show of it initially, but as soon as the **** gets thick, he is bailing to. But he is had, and whatever moves on to the next one. They are a false sense of security.
IMO. That depends on breed. I keep a rooster with each flock which is anywhere from 4-7.

I've been in a coop when hawks approach. I hear the cocks warning, step out to watch the hens run for cover and the cocks all stand like statues facing the hawk. I've seen the hawk swoop and a rooster go up to meet it and take it down. Then the rooster casually strides back to the hens. The hawk finally recovers, staggers to its feet and flies off.

I had a pair of huskies attack a free range flock. The rooster held them off till the hens got to a high roost and then he flew to the roof. There were feathers around but all the birds survived.

I've lost a couple cocks over the years during the day but very rare.

There is nothing wrong with going to a feed store and getting a half dozen pullets, and if it is just you and your husband, four would be enough.

They will be good layers, fun to have etc. There is nothing wrong with some hatchery birds for having some backyard layers. My Pet Chicken etc. sell small quantities of pullets. Some of the hatcheries are starting to sell small quantities.

Do not take this wrong, but you do not know the difference yet. Few of us did to start off with.

I started my interest in chickens by walking a mile (uphill both ways) with grass cutting money and got a dozen free chicks with a bag of feed from the feed store. I did not know I was getting all cockerels, but I enjoyed them, and went back for more. This time White Rock Pullets. I thought I had the best birds in the world.

Get set up, and get you some chicks, and enjoy those chicks. Hatcheries are fine for starting out. Especially while you are getting the kinks worked out.
X2.

I might add that when one has fresh eggs in their own backyard, they'll eat a lot more than they currently do.
The second autumn when they take their molt break. 4 won't be enough.

Wow, when did they start selling 3?
They're down the road from me (about 4 hours or so)
