Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Check Sandhill Preservation. If you're going to pay that much get a few and complete 25 min with $1.35 SR assorted. Just a thought. They don't sell sexed birds so SR means SR. Half and half. That's what I'm doing on my lt sussex I'm ordering. And the quality is better than than hatchery.

Good luck.
Since I can only have 6 hens in my area I don't feel comfortable getting more than 6 chickens or doing straight runs.

When I first started I got my first birds from a lady I found on Craig's list. She was willing to take back any males and swap for females. I licked out I got all females. The 2nd time I got pullets from a fellow BYCer & we had the same deal. Only 1 was a male & she swapped him for a she. Perhaps you could find someone in your area who would do this for you?

Ron, when do you see your son?
We came back last evening. He didn't want to spend the night in Pittsburgh so he drove back.

He needs to re-learn that the U.S. has speed limits and that horrific rates of speed are not required

to survive here.

I'm not a religious man but Someone was looking over us last night. Never even

saw a cop...not even coming toward us!!!

I know he's been 'lurking' and if not already done, we will almost certainly open an account!

Thanks to everyone for thinking of us. It's great to have him home...Now to get some work out of him ! ! !

I have contacted some people that only do straight run Buckeyes, but they don't do trades =/ I'm hoping that I find someone who's willing to work with me. It wouldn't be a problem if I didn't REALLY want Buckeyes. *sigh*

There is nothing wrong with going to a feed store and getting a half dozen pullets, and if it is just you and your husband, four would be enough.

They will be good layers, fun to have etc. There is nothing wrong with some hatchery birds for having some backyard layers. My Pet Chicken etc. sell small quantities of pullets. Some of the hatcheries are starting to sell small quantities.

Do not take this wrong, but you do not know the difference yet. Few of us did to start off with.

I started my interest in chickens by walking a mile (uphill both ways) with grass cutting money and got a dozen free chicks with a bag of feed from the feed store. I did not know I was getting all cockerels, but I enjoyed them, and went back for more. This time White Rock Pullets. I thought I had the best birds in the world.

Get set up, and get you some chicks, and enjoy those chicks. Hatcheries are fine for starting out. Especially while you are getting the kinks worked out.

I know there is nothing wrong with it, but I really want Buckeyes and unfortunately, they are not at my local feed stores =(

Chances are, you are going to figure out the sex quickly enough that you could get them and then as soon as you know you have males, put an ad on Craigslist to get rid of the males and whichever excess females that you wound up with. Until they are larger and you are putting them outside and they are being seen by people, no one would be the wiser if you had more than just 6.

Like others have said...you can order 15 Buckeyes from Cackle Hatchery. Not show birds but they are Buckeyes none the less.

If you order pullets, you are certainly going to get at least 2 cockerels. Give away or sell what you don't want or cant keep.

To most people, Buckeyes, White Rocks (on and on) all look alike. If you are allowed 6 then only show six at a time.

I know a lady in Baltimore MD, where only 4 dogs are allowed but she owns 12 standard poodles. only a very few close friends and neighbors know the actual number because ....just like Buckeyes.......

Just be reasonable and SMART about it...
