There is nothing wrong with going to a feed store and getting a half dozen pullets, and if it is just you and your husband, four would be enough.
They will be good layers, fun to have etc. There is nothing wrong with some hatchery birds for having some backyard layers. My Pet Chicken etc. sell small quantities of pullets. Some of the hatcheries are starting to sell small quantities.
Do not take this wrong, but you do not know the difference yet. Few of us did to start off with.
I started my interest in chickens by walking a mile (uphill both ways) with grass cutting money and got a dozen free chicks with a bag of feed from the feed store. I did not know I was getting all cockerels, but I enjoyed them, and went back for more. This time White Rock Pullets. I thought I had the best birds in the world.
Get set up, and get you some chicks, and enjoy those chicks. Hatcheries are fine for starting out. Especially while you are getting the kinks worked out.
