Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Lacy Blues...I can understand why you would feel

about eating any part of any rodent but...if **it hits the fan, you and many others will soon be out in the City Parks and common wood lots, looking for ny thing form fox squirrels to chipmunks!

It wasn't so much the ""parts" but more the sucking the brain out through the eye socket part! Ugh! I got the same reaction when my young daughter expounded upon the practice of removing the brain through the nasal cavity that the ancient Egyptians practiced for mummification. Quite nauseating.

And I'm not squeamish by any means. I can perform minor surgeries on my birds and even had to amputate a toe that had gotten broken and I couldn't get to heal. However, I'm not sure but I think I could do these same things to any human that might need it. If I had the money to get an advanced education, I'd probably make a great pathologist as I find that kind of thing highly interesting.

Maybe pathologist isn't the right word. .. someone who performs autopsies. Watching Sid on CSI New York is fun.

Oh, and I will not be in any city park. I'm staying put right here as I have plenty of birds in the freezer. I need to learn to can meat though. I'm somewhat of a preppy too and I'm working on it.

Pathology is good..if you really want to do it, money is no object...

Squirrel is my absolute favorite kind of meat... And that's saying a lot because I'm a huge meat eater. I just wish there were more meat on em. Soak em for an hour or two in milk after you skin them... Oh my mouth is watering

I've never heard of any 4+ year universities that educate people for free, at least not white folks!
There are grants, loans etc. If there's a Land Grant school in your state, they can make special accommodations. You can take online courses for a while, just to get your feet wet but NOT one of those rip-offs! Perhaps take just 3 credit hours for a while...Where there's a will, someone can die and leave you a bunch of money! The last sentence was joking but if you really want something...you can get it.

Example: a friend quit smoking and saved enough money to pay for a new truck. He simply gave something he didn't need but loved/craved for something we wanted more. I do know from experience, it 'aint easy!

That's too funny. In Europe they sell the tripe in plastic containers, for dogs. I can tell you, it's about the same price as a can of Alpo. Never thought to get it from the source. I just remember that stuff stinking to high heavens.

And beef tongue (and brain.. until mad cow disease) is a fancy delicacy

My younger brother went to culinary school and they had to try everything they cooked, including beef tongue.

Ofcourse, horse is a fairly common meat in the grocery stores. Smoked and sliced thin as a deli-meat or made into sausage. And in Scotland they like the whole haggis thing.. and well, there's pate and liverwurst. In the US offal is just not that well received, unless it's disguised as a hot dog.

The differences between continents... it amazes.
I love tongue but can't find it much in the stores and it's now quite expensive. Bummer.

Back to Heritage Large Fowl...

A couple of my Black Java chicks are developing wing covert feathers that stick out from the body instead of fitting closely to the body. The chicks are obviously culls, but I have not seen this before and was wondering if anyone could give me a clue as to what causes it, or what I need to watch for in future matings. The chicks are from two different hens. Not sure who the cock was - eggs were collected during a transition period and it could have been either of two different birds. The weird feather growth is symmetrical and has been consistent ever since the feathers started growing in. It's not just a mussed-up bird.

Chick in photo is three weeks old:

These photos are of the same three week old chick. The flash washed out the black in the second photo.

Sarah

Edited to add: They don't all look like this! Several of them look really good.

they are three weeks old. Give them time. They will not look like that at 30 weeks old.

Hi,
Last time checked, anyone 55 or over could go to a State College for free.
Best,
Karen
