Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Keep in mind this is likely written with commercial egg layers in mind, which are quite a bit different than a true standard bred bird. Remember part of the breeding process of commercial birds was finding ways to make them productive on cheap waste ingredients to increase profit margins.

It was so written, and the recommendations are different for white-shelled layers, brown-shelled layers, white-shelled breeders, and meat-type breeders. I was startled by the listed differences. My ration matched the "white layers" and I am working towards an improved "meat breeders" ration, with fresh, high-quality sources of the missing/insufficient nutrients. I think I found a lab that will test my improved ration for the nutrients in question, too.
Best wishes,
Angela

My mind is constantly riddled with doubt. I think it might be part of the human equation...

My father cut to the chase by saying, "Prove it".

Can we move the whole HLF thread there and call it "Phase III " ?

We are already split into 2 groups. Here and the "Production bred" thread.

What do you say? Should we lock this thread and move to the New Frontier

lock ,stock , and barrel? ( Well leave the lock here anyway. Boldly going

where no HLF thread has gone before! We could delete that "Sussex" thread

I parked there as a place holder .

Best,

Karen

Oh way cool! Did you hear that hellbender has a teacher coming out to teach him caponizing and he is making a video to upload to BYC? Oh I want to read that book to before I see the video. Which one is it? Thanks!

BTW, do you happen to know about blueberry pie? I have recipes but they call for fresh and I have frozen blueberries. Do I need to do anything different when I make the filling? Can I make a cooked filling or just pile everything in without cooking the berries?

Here you go: Around page 7 or so. Pullets.

Yeah, that was me on bended knee begging for the video before he left town.

Karen, I think that is a good idea. I am already subscribed to so many threads, hard to keep up with them all. I would feel like I have to read on both of these threads. And with the new thread being an SOP thread I no longer have to feel like I can't post about SOP bred breeds that aren't "heritage"--nice!

Karen's idea has my vote..but we will still be very happy if the SOP folks come to the PRODUCTION THREAD. Good information is needed, no matter where it comes form.

An SOP thread will be great but it will still be like herding cats. If it can stay on track I'll try to get more APA people involved. I haven't posted much on this thread lately because it has wondered all over the place.

Walt, I hope you stop by the new thread. It would be great to have more APA people involved. Some of us are trying to make up for lost time and would like the additional voices. It adds balance. It might also suck in new people that might turn out to be committed breeders and exhibitors.
