Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Ok, this is fascinating. I wonder if this is one of the ways Egglands Best is improving their eggs. I am going to find out where to buy this All-G-Rich supplement. Read the Conclusion first. I find it makes these articles much more understandable, smile.
Best,
Karen

This is a great article on the history and importance of granite grit in poultry. I came across it last year and then "lost" the URL. Just found it again. Well worth a look. I get my granite grit from a North Carolina quarry but. I hope this quarry is still in production too.
Well North Carolina is still goingbut the other one isn't :, excerpt, "
Although the Wells-Lamson facility went out of operation a half century ago,
granite poultry grit is still manufactured by the North Carolina Granite Co. of Mt.
Airy, NC. They produce five grades of “GRAN-I-GRIT” poultry grit – starter,
grower, developer-layer, turkey, and turkey finisher – from granite that is quite
similar to Lithonia and Wells-Lamson granites."
Interestingly Gran-I-Grit bags have a drawing of "StoneMo the Strudy Chicken" on them.

From what I understand ...

Mash: all the ingredients of a balanced ration ground to an appropriate texture, mixed, bagged. Might settle so the nutrition becomes less evenly distributed. Might be easy to waste. Sometimes people call wet poultry rations "mash."

Pellets: the same stuff as mash, but steam pressed into bite-sized nuggets of complete, balanced nutrition. What my poultry nutritionist recommends. Less waste.

Crumbles: pellets fractured into pieces small enough for chicks. Also good, but easier to waste.

Both pellets and crumbles can be moistened to make wet feed.

If you call NC Granite they will tell you who carries their grit in different locations. If birds are free range they usually pick up plenty of grit themselves with out supplementing.
However if they are confined it is wise to add grit., My chicks start in the brooder at day 3 eating fermented whole grain and its supplemented with chick grit. As soon as they hit the free range dirt we don't provide grit . All gizzards from our culls are loaded with grit.
Just my observation.
