Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Hi thread !

Just joining and too much going on with my mini farm to read it all - but I'm here to learn and I LOVE seeing pictures.

Sounds like the Ohio show was a real hit ! Glad and appropriate that Buckeyes got a little love for the show.

:)

How did they look?

They were of sound type. They were not as large as the Silver Laced, which were IMO the best Wyandottes there. The black in the markings wasn't as intense as I'd hope. There was something faded about it. All in all, though, I imagine they're as good as any, and they'd be a great spring board for future endeavors.

PS: With Daniel picking up the La Fleche and you adding the Lakenvelder, they seem like excellent complements to your Buckeyes.
Been gauging my pen set ups. I think I've got them figured out. Just need some of the females to mature/finish molt and I'll be popping out chicks in no time.

I'll probably keep some until Columbus next year for sale pens.

Structure is there. Just need to Flèche it out

Hello Daniel & Joseph:

I wish I could have gone to ON.

Were there any La Fleche shown at ON?

Congrats to Laura for BB Buckeye with 42 Buckeyes in the open show.

I entered the pair I purchased from Urch. But not to actually show them. Only to house them. Bill ended up bringing something like 14 birds. One made it to champion row for junior(one of the Cockerels I purchased). The breast shape on them is phenomenal in my opinion. Their back width is pretty narrow, but that is something that can be easily worked with. I'm unsure of how well their egg parts are. Haven't had a really good chance to handle them just yet. Truly all his need are size and comb management. The shape of the birds is spot on.

Ahem. There were in fact five LF Lakenvelders.  :D

The three that Duane brought me I had entered because I didn't want them to sit in the sale area or in crates under my cages (sale areas of any show give me the heebie jeebies.) The cockerel of the trio won BB in fact (I should let Duane know.)

I did not know that one could buy or sell birds at poultry shows. At the dog shows, the exhibitors can get into serious trouble for even talking about it within someone else's ear shot. Actually, I think it is good idea, but, at the same time can be dangerous for some.. I mean, I wonder how many people came back home with car full of birds that they had not considered of having before the day at the show.

Lol, you haven't been to many shows have you? :p Its very common for people to say they have willpower going in. Its very common for them to admit defeat when leaving. A lot of folks load up on birds at shows whether it is planned or not.

How on earth did I miss FIVE Lakenvelders?! I'm glad that the delivery happened!
Actually, I am sure it was easy to do. As much as I adore the OH National (and I do!) I was unhappy that there were pigeon cages stacked on top of so many birds. I know it was a record breaking show, but having cages atop the Buckeyes at our National Meet made it hard to see the birds clearly (obviously the judge could) and hard to get good quality photos. Daniel and I were lucky Neil took our birds out to take pictures again! But no way to get good shots of the Lakenvelder class, and my poor daughter, in attempting to get the cockerel cooped out, he slipped away from her and she had to grab him by his tail, losing a number of feathers in the process. So no pics of them for now, until they are cleaned up and he has some tail back in. ;)

I actually deliver pre-sold birds to shows routinely. I either buy coops for them in the show area, or put them into cages where I've had to scratch a bird due to it being in molt. Very common to do so. Not everyone wants to use the sale coops, which afaiac, can be dicey, in terms of exposure to disease.
