Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

We keep .17 Remingtons in our vehicles. They will kill anything that can cause us problems around here ...even black bear but I wouldn't shoot one unless my life depended on it. We each have Contenders in .410/45 Colt with 10 inch bull-barrels for anything that might require a dose of absolute lethality.

Anything works if you have gun control - David got it done with a rock.

Hi,
If you had a 1 yr. old hen that was not laying at all this time of year, all other things considered equal, would you consider culling it?
Thanks,
Karen

I am considering letting some of my older hens go. They sre molting and have not layed for over two months now, My EE and Americuana seems to have stopped. Some of my Del. hens too. Time for me to rvamp my flock., I like to keep them total to about 12 or 14 hens and two roos. Too much work for this getting older woman. I .ll be 70 in Nov. Sigh with all my maladies to go along. I need to slow down some. I enjoy sharing my new pullets and roos too. Now just to get the energy to sort =them.

She may be fixin to molt. We are getting into the time when year to year and a half hens will be molting, and I have heard about some starting already this year.

Remember, some breeds will not look bad when they molt the first time--you will see extra feathers though.

One of my Chantecler hens (~1 1/2 yo) is just finishing her molt. She did a pretty good job blowing and regrowing feathers quickly, and surprisingly also decided it would be the perfect time to go broody and raise a clutch of chicks. It was funny seeing a half naked hen leading chicks around, and nice that she found a job while not laying eggs.

We had some hens that didn't lay much at all last year and we were going to cull them and now this year they are laying. And we couldn't find a darn thing that made any sense as to why they didn't lay hardly at all last year. I would say it's up to you and how important the bird may be to you and how much room you have and if you've explored all options of why it might not be laying. And don't know about yours, but our birds started molting a few weeks ago - earlier than they have ever molted and some other friends have said their birds are molting.

Yes feathers every where and egg production started slowing about 3 weeks ago - we are down to 3 eggs/ 16 hens yesterday.
and some bare skin with pin feathers visible . Here the molt is on combined with hot weather.

Molting here too. Egg production is also slow, very slow. Yes, its early here too. Wonder what is up. Do they know something we don't? Maybe an early hard winter is coming. :/
