Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Just joking Walt . I remember your post about "Big Bubba Coon"
He only shows up once in a blue moon .
Have you seen him lately ?

As it turns out it was a huge female and she is no longer with us.....that took about 5 years to catch her. Now I have another one but things are pretty secure here now and I have discovered a way to catch them. they would never go into traps before, but I accidently dis

covered that they will go into an empty cage with eggs in it. This is the one that caused so much problems.

This is the one I need to catch now, but he knows I am after him so he will be gone for a while. It has not been back since this picture. My electric fence is about finished so that should stop most of it. I have killed huge raccoons here over the years. They have all these vineyards to live in but they have a taste for fowl.

How do you make it 13' wide? Two panels that meet in the middle? I am wanting to build a couple for winter protection off the coop so they can get sun and have protection.

Thanks!

I have chosen Speckled Sussex as the breed I want to work with for many of the same reasons you listed for yours. One of the neatest things I have run across was where a Breeder from England went through all the points listed in the SOP for Speckled Sussex and explained WHY that particular selection criteria was in the SOP. It was all based on reasons of economy!

Where did you find that info? I would love to read it! Thanks.

BREAKING NEWS !
After today I might need to build a large trap cage .
Opened back door to barn and heard all chickens raising hell.
Looked in back and a Black Bear was chasing them around and over
the porch of the coop trailer in my avatar. Chickens were running under trailer from one side to the other and the Bear was circling the wagons.
I yelled and ran inside to get the gun out of
its case on the ATV. By the time I got to the Enet corral the chickens were still making alarm noises.
The back of the run is wooded and when I got there I could see the shadow going back and forth
then it started my way down the left side. I took a shot to the left of the bear to turn it which it did.
So I ran around the other side and it was pacing back and forth at the fence the fence but not exiting.
So I let off another round but instead of exiting it went up a large tree.
Evidently it had made a lunge at the chickens thru the electric fence pushing it down to get in without shock but when it tried to go out it got zapped and
would not go back close to that fence. It was not the same Bear I have pics of this was a younger bear . Most likely just got kicked out from under the sows
paw because she breeding . This Bear was about 20 months old and weigh about twice my German mix dog . So guessing about 180 pounds.
Excitement for the day

Did I read that right ... you ran toward a bear to save your chickens ???

I saw a tiny garter snake in the feed room last week and literally thought about giving up poultry.
