Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

My reasoning for avoiding NPIP is that I cannot find ONE THING our federal government does well .... so why welcome them into my backyard to initiate more bureaucracy, which they certainly cannot manage. I digress

Well, if you are shipping birds, it's a plus as some States won't welcome shipped birds unless the flocks they came from is NPIP. Plus, I a told it makes it easier at the shows when you can just show your NPIP instead of having the birds blood tested. Tho I have only heard this last, not confirmed it.
Best,
Karen

Karen....you are correct!!....but, I still refuse

When they came out to test my first batch of 11 birds they typoed the results
Took me three phone calls to fix im with yard full o rocks on this one!!!

Quote: This is unfortunate. We did over 100 birds, about 130, and the tester brought help along with DH and I , we whipped thru the birds in about 2-3 hours. Tester said next time, he won't bring help as we had the birds all cooped up and ready for him. We set him up under a tent, with a chairs and tables.

All states are different; in my state the state pays for all the testing. THey used to charge but by the time money was flying around and having to calc costs, track it, deposit it etc. it was far simpler to make the service free. We do not have a backyard subsidized program here-- guess that is a fair trade for the free testing. I know other states make it very difficult.

Quote: Karen I agree, that book is well worth reading.

I forgo most high carb foods most of the time. I eat a fair amount of clean meat, lots of eggs , repeat lots of eggs and beef and some vegies and small amount of fruits. I no longer have the afternoon slump; my energy is high thru the whole day; the sleepless nights are gone gone gone. I can put a dog out in the middle of the night, lean against the door waiting for his return, then walk back to bed and I"m falling asleep as I lay down. I acheived all these changes with in a week of dumping all high carb foods ( no potatos, no rice, no breads, no pasta) and eating just enough vegies for about 20 carbs a day. THese days I eat much more carb than that but not the huge helpings like I used to. NO going back to the standard AMerican diet for me. I will keep the fresh meats and eggs and green salads with mushrooms and scallions and salad dressing. I'm 40 pounds down and aim to keep it off. I eat more of the "wild" foods like prickly pear, arugala, alfalfa sprouts. Often trying new vegies. I never bread my meats with a grain product; instead I use ground almond flour in my cakes. With plenty of real butter, cream and olive oils. My kids rarely eat pop corn,; popped sorghum tastes just as good.THat nutty flavor. Kids like cut oats instead of oatmeal. I'm with you Karen, bye-bye wheat. Lots of choices on the market these days.

Wow, that is unbelievably lame...glad I'm not in CA, sorry you have to put up with that.  But yeah in your place I'd either say (expletive) NPIP, or find someone else to talk to about the non subsidized program.

For all the rules here in California they don't require npip to keep, show or sell poultry.

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could help me with picking out a breed of chicken for my first bunch of show quality birds? Me and my best friend are going to be buying hatching eggs, but can't seem to find any breeds we like that would be good for beginners.

We are looking for anything big (rooster 8-10 pounds, hens 6-8 or something similar), easy to breed, somewhat easy to handle, pretty (by this we mainly mean not plain black or white birds) and in a colour in the SOP... please help us, we need to find a breed soon!

Thanks,
David.
