Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Only molt and reaching age 5 slows down my Australorp hens. They will drop to 2 eggs a week for two to three weeks and then have returned to laying. At 5 years of age the girls average 4 - 5 a week.

My Australorps from Chester Hupp:

Five of my 11 hens have been laying steadily for 11 months.Summer heat never phased them either.A couple tried to go broody this fall. Two days in a broody coop, and they were back to laying. I guess eggs = a "get out of jail free card " here.

Ron and nanakat-- are these hatchery bred or breeder bred-- just for clarity, in case there is a line diference.

Henderson's chicken chart is based on averages of the breeds they have on the chart. They have 60 so the chart is not a slouch, but they do not have the fancy new breeds on it.

From poking around and checking on different sources, including the Australorp Thread, both hatchery and Standard Bread Australorps are similar layers. They have not lost Utility for laying yet. The Standard Bred Australorps are better at producing meat for the table though.

The Blue Australorp pullet in the picture I posted weighed a bit over 6 pounds a couple of weeks ago when I took the picture. That was around 25 weeks old.

Mine are from Ideal hatchery and are part of my layer flock. They were bought as pullets. They have been good layers and good mothers. Even had one hen adopt chicks when another hen gave up on them at two weeks of age.

Morning all

Is anyone from the "deep south" going to the Ohio Nationals and by chance coming thru Atlanta on your way up?

There is a lady in Ohio who contacted me about birds to help her get her son into 4H. I'm trying to find them "a ride" to help defray the crazy cost of shipping these birds to her.

PM me if there is anyone you know or if you might be able to help and thank you in advance

I thought that this was kind of a neat thing that our club is doing for our show November 9th and wanted to share. It’s something that had done and been involved with years ago with a few other hobbies/clubs that I was heavily invested in and it seemed to go over well back then. In fact it’s one of the few trophies that I ever won and kept to date. Tell me what you think.

Our club is going to be doing a People’s Choice Award at our Poultry Show. Anyone can vote for any bird at the show that they like the best for any reason what so ever. Color, Breed, and/or Type whatever tickles you about that particular bird. Throw the SOP books out the window and vote for the bird you like the best just because. We are going to be calling it the "Bob Blosl Award" since he has inspired and touched so many people throughout the years! I'm real excited about this and it helps to get everyone that shows up to see the birds at the show involved in what we are doing. Heck, it should be a lot of fun to boot. We are planning to do a Winner and a Runner Up for this award!

So what do you think...

Chris
