Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Such detailed, at times quite raw information about the sentient beings' blood, flesh, and bones is very difficult to read about, and come to terms with.

I thought this thread was about breeding, and improving the heritage fowl we; or I should say; some of us love, care for, and respect!

Good day,

Lual

No my Dear...the really hard part was keeping 'really raw information' to a minimum. No one was forced to read it and I believe that some folks might improve the health of their stock by feeding a more 'down to earth' diet.

And I can't stop before I write the following ditty...."All God's Chickens Gotta; Eat"...You know my Avatar...when you see it, avert thine eyes, if you fear they be offended in any way. That 'scroll' device helps me get past most of what I consider nonsense...we all have that power..

Good Morning to All!!!

EDIT: I feel rather badly but I just 'BLOCKED' MS. Shannon. It goes against my grain but anyone who wishes to block me, feel free... there will be no hard feelings. I have no time for that.

I'll tell you wnat's not so funny. I remember a couple people on this thread who's chickens might well have delighted to get just a little bite of the high quality food my birds get every day, no matter how cold it gets or how hot for that matter.

Additionally they have warm fresh water at least 4 or 5 times each and every cold day (like this morning) and ICE cold water available 24 hours per day in hot weather.

I will never leave them cooped up without feed and water, in an effort to "keep heat in the coops". I think more likely to keep certain 'tootsies' close to the fire....after all, they're only chickens.

Ron, I want to reiterate my appreciation of the recipes.

I have little tolerance for wasting potential food stuffs now. THe Perdue ads on TV that proclaimed an all vegetable diet really bothered me when that advertising campaign started. I shook my head at the nonsense designed to appeal to ignorant people. Chickens are one of the two meat production animals that can use offal and trimmings from the chicken, beef and pork slaughter houses. Otherwise it goes into dog and cat food. I love that I have chickens that can recycle almost any foodstuff.

In the last few years I have been introduced to some of the more needy people in my town. That some people do not have enough food bothers me. There is one homeless man that gets my extra eggs. I can usually find him at the library. He is always grateful and has a story to tell. He spent all his life farming and has a lifetime of info to share and is willing to share it. I hardly feel like my dozen eggs pays for his knowledge. I can't throw away food stuff of any kind now that I have chickens.

Absolutely well said. We are a self sustaining farm - zero waste allowed. Everything has a purpose. ;-)

I hung a ham bone up by a rope in the poultry yard a while back. It was so funny..
They stripped it in no time. I have one in the freezer. I think I will defrost ot today and hang it
up in their yard as a honorarium to Hellbender's sharing.
Ron, I do appreciate your sharing and see the value in it.
Best,
Karen ( who has come out of the darkness enough to move the Sussex from 16% Dumor
to 22% Agway Meatbird.).
