Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Some time this week I should have chicks. My hen is almost 11 months old and her first clutch. I have been listening for chirping from the nest and have looked at the eggs when she gets out for food and water. which she does every morning when i bring fresh water. I hear nothing and have not seen any cracks in the eggs except for one. It looks like she had stepped on the egg but there was only a little fluid that had came out and no smell. I hope all is well and hope to see my little ones soon.

Good luck

! I'm setting my first batch tonight (eight eggs so far). Technically it's my third one, but the first two were all duds. These eggs are coming from my Burchett line of buff Brahmas and my Aldrich line of lights. Hoping for some good chicks this year!

My chicks haven't hatched yet. I may have had my time line wrong. When she got out of the nest this morning i noticed that there are only 4 eggs left in the nest. No eggs have been kicked out. On further inspection of the nest I saw egg shell pieces. Is it possible that she is eating the dead eggs. I did not see any matted feathers on the hen or egg mess in the box that would suggest that eggs blew up. Any opinions?

It is possible that the chicks hatched and are hiding or have been eaten by something. Hope they are just hiding.

Well I went through the coop and no chicks and no place where any thing could have gotten in. And now she is down to two eggs in the nest. So I guess no chicks this time

. She is a very broody hen so I am sure she will try again.

May is sitting eggs sired by Tux, her son. I know some of the eggs will be 30+ days old by the 21st day. Shall I remove those eggs to make sure they don't explode in the nest? If I remove all the eggs and she is broody, will she lay more eggs and still sit on them the required 3 weeks? Tux's comb is healing nicely from the frostbite. I don't know if he is fertile yet. It's a good possibility.
Thanks,
Karen

Can you candle them??? I thought that once they went broody, they quit laying.
