He's crowing in the rain...

Smart Aleck is my 3+ month old silkie roo, and has been experimenting with weird sounds for a few weeks. In the big storm, yesterday, he showed no inclination to come in out of the rain. Just sat there posing, on top of the little shelter over the coop entry. Then all of a sudden, he puffed up and let out the most melodious crow I've ever heard. Looking pleased with himself, he repeated this a half dozen times. Then he headed back inside to join his more sensible nestmates.

Today, about 10 am, the storm was raining heavily, and I heard him again. This time, it was about a dozen crows. Again, I couldn't help but think he was enjoying crowing in the rain! He definitely has a great crow, too.

Sigh, it means he's a big boy, and I'm going to have to get rid of him soon. I've been looking for possible homes, since my area doesn't allow roosters, but haven't found anything yet except a feed store out of the area. He's not quite to the age limit yet, but it's coming. I'll miss him. He's a sweetie, and now he turns out to have the most melodious crow. Even if he doesn't have the sense to come in out of the rain!

How cute! I hope you find him a really good home.

That's one happy bird...Sure he's not really singing "I'm singing in the rain" but in chickenese? lol oh..geezzz. Now I have that song stuck in my head!

If I wasn't on the East Coast, I'd take him. Hope you stay safe out there in California.

It's hard for me to imagine a *crowing* Silkie rooster! Maybe he thinks the pattering raindrops are a bunch of competing roosters!

Congrats & condolences on your boy growing up!! We aren't too far from you in Oroville, but have a friend who re-homed her Silkies after finishing her FFA project. I could check with her to see if they would like a songster like your boy since I know that she still has visiting rights if you don't find something closer. I also have someone who got a couple Bantam Cochin pullets from me who might be interested and would be a wonderful home. I would love to take him, but I think my little Bantam Cochin roo, Carlos, would get his feelings hurt. Let me know and I will ask....
