I think it starts with google...someone thinks about chickens and googles...and then that leads them here...but that question leads to another that leads to a topic, that leads to a discussion, and then you are lurking often and just reading and reading, and then you are like Hey, I'll sign up

That's exactly how I ended up here! I wanted chickens (had been asking my husband to jump on board for years) and FINALLY he told me to do a little research and if I learned everything I needed to know (btw, I STILL haven't learned everything I need to know!) and I still wanted chickens, he'd go along with it. After about a month of researching, using google as a base and usually ending up here anyway, I got my first Chickie Darlings and signed up for BYC. This place has been invaluable! And everyone is so friendly and helpful. I love it here!

Well, you know, not all the "guests" are always just lurkers...sometimes registered users just read without signing in, or may not realize they are not signed in still unless they try to comment.

Yes! Being a member is Awesome! Though I don't often put my two cents in I love reading all the posts! One reason I don't speak up is because most of the time someone has already said it better! Chicken lovers are very smart group! Love Backyard Chickens!

That's how I found the page I googled images for baby chicks and almost every photo was from here. Google really draws a crowd

Well our whole culture is based on google...think of all the many things it has changed...Can you remember having hours long arguments about random useless trivia, or important dates in history? I can...but now one person says one thing, and another says something different and then they both whip out their cell phones to google who is right...Did you know that the human brain is actually changing in the way it stores information because people use google now and don't try to remember as many things...They aren't sure if that will make people smarter, or dumber. They are thinking the extra memory space can be filled with other things, but they aren't sure that it just isn't gone totally, as opposed to being used to remember something else. Anyway people now store less in their memories than they used to.

I believe technology in general is actually making us dumber. (Yes, I said dumber for emphasis.)
But think about it, once upon a time, people could remember phone numbers and addresses and other tid bits of information that cell phones and PDAs now recall for you.
