Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper? Part 2

Last night we had chili cheese dogs. Iwas glad to have aquick easy meal to prepare. We had a fire on our propety yesterday!! DH was outside splitting wood and smelled something strange. He looked over the property and saw a small wisp of smoke! He filled the tractor bucket with water as we have no running water on that part of the property. By the time he got the water down there it was raging! He was cutting fire breaks with the tractor running from one end of the fire to the other as was needed. We have a big forest fire in our area right now, so it took about 20min. for forest service and county fire to show up. In the mean time, I was running buckets of water down to DH, DGD was filling buckets, DH was shoveling dirt on it. Neighbors started showing up with shovels to help, one neighbor brought his pickup that has a 500gal. water tank and pump and hose!! That is what really saved the day! By the time any fire support came it was mainy down to smoking hot spots! Thank God all we lost was brush and sage in our creek! We were very lucky that DH has been home a lot from lack of work and also was not off hiking or scouting for the up-coming deer season. I would not have known where to start or what to do. Many neighbors were gone yesterday and many others only the wives were home, it could have taken our whole valley! We are not looking forward to the bill we will surely be getting to pay for the five hours the fire support was here!

For tonite, I will figure out something using some ground chicken that needs to be used.

Thank God no one got hurt or worse, and we still have our house!

Thank goodness you are all ok. That would be so incredibly scary. I worry about that too. We burn our garbage and our closest neighbor is 3 miles away over a hill. They wouldn't even see it until it was out of control. DH does not like me to burn while he is gone because I would be helpless. We haul our water so we have a water truck with a hose, but I can't drive a stick. It is so dry around here, it could be catastrophic. You are blessed to have such kind neighbors.

I hope today is much less eventful for you.

How scary cknmom! I'm sure glad to hear that you got it out. What is this "fire support" that you write about? Isn't the county fire dept covered by tax dollars? If so, you shouldn't have to pay for it, right?

Today is Wednesday and thus it should be B4D tonight. Unless I get to the grocery store, it'll be something simple like cereal or eggs.

I forgot that it is wed.! I'll wait on the chicken-again! I will make a chili-reano casserole.

Fire support is our local forest service fire trucks/fighters and county fire trucks/fighters. In the economy now, it seems that whenever you need help you used to get for free, you have to pay for it. One of the investigators suggested that we call our insurance agent. I wouldn't have even thought of that because it do no damage to any structures. DH says that if we get a bill, insurance MIGHT cover some of the cost. Two of the fire-fighters that took reports/investigated indicated that we would get no bill, but another almost stated that we would. We will keep our fingers crossed that we don't

. But with how this year has been going, I don't hold my breath.

I haven't mentioned anything in months about our other DGD's that are with their father. DD has been going through the courts like mad trying to get this situation settled. When she got back from Afghanistan she had to fight through the courts and have police intervention to get him to give her back the girls-again! He took them for his visistation again in july, before she even went to pick them up, he told her he was not going to give them back! right now there is a warrent for his arrest, he caught wind of it and took them to his new wife's parents house. DD has not been able to get him to return her calls for the normal phone visitations with the girls this week, if he doesn't call back on fri. the warrent will be changed to kidnapping and amber alerts will go out! The good thing about all this is that since he is activly evading the arrest warrant- he will not only go to prison for a few years but will lose his parental rights!! I kept telling my daughter that everything happens for a reason and God has his plan. The father kept getting his way and was so smug about it, I kept telling her to keep giving him more rope, he was bound to hang himself, and he has!

Oh what a heart wrenching situation. I could not begin to tell you what kind of a person I could turn into if someone was stopping me from seeing my child. Why do some people just have to be evil? I will be praying this comes to a happy ending, and soon. I agree with what you said, God has a plan and everything happens for a reason.

yummm plz post recipe for chili relano casserole.. we had super dogs tonight..hot dogs grilled and topped with onion.. tomato wedges and a dill pickle spear and mustard.. nice and easy .. cantalope and corn on cob...

Cknmom, glad everyones OK. Chickenchick THIS IS A SCOLDING! Let this be your wakeup call, you need to learn to drive a stick, you never know when you might need it. What is with Wednesday being B4D? Guess I'll have to start next week. We're having 7 layer salad.

B4D is something I started when my kids were little, to save my sanity mostly. DH works late on Wed., so making something simple was necessary. The kids have come to love it and expect it. It's scorchin' (for the Bay) here today, so I'm still trying to figure out dinner. I did the next 2 weeks shopping, this morning, so I'm fully stocked ..but just have no incentive to be in the kitchen.. *whine*

I bought giant zucchini for my Mock Apple Pie attempt.. and I got a small'ish watermelon.. and finally got my nanner leaves! I picked up an array of fresh asian noodles.. so maybe I'll make something like that.. Thai or Chinese.. hmmm

Fresh flat bread with hummus and olives and fruit.. wonder if DH will let me slide with that.. LOL

..and I agree about the learning to drive a manual transmission, thechickenchick! All you really need to know is, get 'er movin' ..1st gear ..2nd ..3rd ...comes easy, after that ..and it's not like you have to worry about too much traffic or raging people honking at you, if you stall 'er
