Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper? Part 2

LOL. It WAS a Freudian slip.

I think that's the true challenge of parenting - to know when to let them work it out, mistakes and all, and when to provide guidance. I know this one first hand. My youngest sister had the misfortune of having 3 older sisters (in addition to two parents) who often had no patience to let her struggle through a project. We ALL took over way too often and then wondered why she was so dependent. I've got to give it to her. She's finishing her college degree in a couple months, despite a few stops and starts over the years. Who cares if she's nearly twice the age of her classmates. I couldn't be more proud of her - AND she did it herself!

Your girls are still quite young. To be doing what they're doing at their ages is to be commended.

Thanks Annesa's Muse and happyhen! Each of you does it a little bit differently than the other and both are different than the recipe I was given.

This recipe I have is most similar to this one . . .
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/filipino-chicken-adobo-recipe/index.html
. . . except that instead of the bay leaves and peppercorns, there is a teaspoon of pickling spice. Water is also added, so it isn't quite a potent as this one would be.

I wonder if Adobo is one of those dishes that has regional variations. My husband's uncle is Filipino but by way of Hawaii. Then there's his Native American influences, so who knows if his family adapted the recipe along the way.

I'll have to play around with this one some. We enjoy it, but some variations would be nice as well.

It is hard to let go of the little ones as they get older. One of the hardest things I had to get over was when my kids were small (7-9??) they wold want ot help clean, I would show/tell them how and let them do it. Telling them they did a great job;for their first, second, third time(whatever) was sooo hard while looking at the smears or whatever left behind. Wiating to do it over until they went to bed was sooo hard, but it made them feel independent.

I haven't been on here for a while because everytime I post on this one thread, my computer wiggs out and I have to shut it completely down! Don't know what's wrong.

Made this great cheap meal the other night though;

Mexican-style Macaroni and Sausage- macaroni, chorizo(or other spicy sausage) onion, tomato sauce, cheese. DH LOVED it!! It was very filling also.
My settlement check FINALLY came so today we get to go do MAJOR shopping. We shop for a month at a time, but it usually lasts us a couple or more if I'm careful. Just in time too, almost nothing left in the kitchen!

cknmom - That Mexican Mac sounds great! Recipe, please?

Is the kitchen closed tonight?

We had leftovers, of which we had a bit too much. I always cook extra so that we can avoid eating out when time is short. I think I over did it, tho. I'm going to freeze some of it for another day.

Had some leftover ground turkey from the turkey burgers, so I turned it into turkey meatloaf with a layer of extra sharp cheddar cheese in the middle. Made mashed potatoes and corn to go with it. The girls are saying they dont like it with turkey, but they dont seem to be speaking with empty mouths. lol

As I have zero appetite tonight and only a 4 and 2 year old to feed, we are having hot dogs, sting cheese and leftover rice. I think I will cut up some carrots and broccoli to make myself feel better about the menu...

Kitchen's open 24 hours here. If it's not me cooking, it's the kids, especially in the middle of the night. At least they cook well and clean after.

Chicken and Andouille gumbo with NO's style French bread this afternoon, whatever tonight. DD was home briefly to take her entrance exam for grad school (she passed with flying colors!), and I wanted to make sure sure had a good lunch (and leftovers) to take back with her.

cknmom - your dinner sounds great!

Once again we are going to have fresh caught bluegills and ho made frys, with ho made bread!

Fresh fish caught through the ice are tasty.

Sounds great Bigzio!

It's my hubby's birthday, he gets a t-bone steak, french fries, green beans, and garlic toast. We are having bbq ribletts as well.

DH and I decided to take a class together ..first one this morning.. so it's leftovers when he gets back from karate... that is, if he still has an appetite after the massive piece of chocolate cake I just saw him scarfing down, as he ran out the door...

I'm thinking, some Afghani style food again (we had it a week or so ago) ..for tomorrow. I'm in the mood for that eggplant dish (similar to Bouranee Baunjaun) ...and some homemade "boulani" ..Qaubili Pilau (rice) ...Murgh Kebab (Chicken marinated in yogurt and lemon, then grilled) ..possibly some Kheer for dessert, since I don't care for the Firnee so much

When class was over today, we went to the bookstore there ..and of course, I looked at the cookbooks. I was kind of disappointed to find so many "american" recipes in a supposedly "authentic" book of Middle Eastern foods..

The Fried Oreo recipe was really overkill... haha!
