I have a question is there any difference between raised/homegrown blackberries and the thousands of blackberries that we find growing in the wild around here on the logging roads?

Yeah, there is a difference. Them growing on the logging roads are free for the picken except for the redbugs, ticks and snakes that go with them. And they are a lot harder to pick most of the time. But they are good eaten.

The homegrown berries are good and tastes the same provided that are on your property. Now if they are on your neighbor's property, you might have a problem with the taste and "lead poisoning" ( shotgun) if you know what I mean.

It was home made burritos at this house tonight. No canned stuff either. I cooked the beans in the pressure cooker along with onion, garlic, jalapeno pepper, and seasoned it with cumin, salt, and more of the above. The salsa was home made, too, made by my 12 year old son.

Even whipped up some guacamole at the last minute. Pretty darn yummy!

We have a lot of wild blackberries here; over 2,400' worth in one area of the property alone. Our neighbor does, also. But their berries are a different variety, and while large and beautiful, they don't have nearly the flavor of our smaller ones. People comb the county to get the type we have, which they sell to restaurants, B&B's at the coast, and, of course, take home to eat!

The few we planted in the garden, (Free from a nursery.) have less thorns, and a larger berry, with a pretty good flavor, but not as good as the little ones we have growing wild.

Someone mentioned snakes. They are definitely a consideration. We used to send a dog with the kids when they'd go berry picking, and they had good sized sticks to beat beneath the bushes before picking. Funny thing was, they didn't generally bring home many berries, yet their mouths were an odd color when they got home....

Hey Yogiman: I called my mom last night...I knew she had Sis. Pathkillers recipe for a fruit dumpling...here it is. It may be similar to your grandmothers as you were growing up. I do remember eating this...and it was good! She used it with apples.

Bucket Dumplings

1 pint of flour 1 large tablespoon of butter
2 eggs 1 large tablespoon of Crisco
2 level tsp of Calumet baking powder
2/3 cup of sweet milk
1 quart of sweetened blackberries (just like you do with strawberries)

Mix butter, Crisco, flour, & baking powder. Add eggs, slightly beaten, then milk. Put in a lard can or mold, and smear around side. Place one quart of berries in center. Cover mold, or can, and steam in boiling water for 3 hours. Some folks use bisquick with this one...if your berries are sour...add more sugar. You can substitute with any fruit in season. Pour cream over the top.

**Note...I have never made this...but I remember when they would invite us over, she would have the apple dumplings! Uhmmm....

Well, that's not exactly it but I'm sure it would be good. What I remember about them is that it was a big pot of cooked berries in their juice and then she would roll out the dumplings, cut them in strips and drop them in the pot. It was just like a pot of chicken and dumplings. Mom can still make them just as good when ever she's in the mood and has the berries.

I feel comfortable that I can make them also. I just need to round up some berries that are just starting to ripen here now and give it a try. Next project for me now.

Grilled sirloin steak, potatoes w/cheese and mushrooms in foil, vidalia onions (middle cut out and replaced w/butter and boullion cube), homemade ice cream, strawberries (from last year's garden) and birthday cake. We're celebrating my favorite middle son's 24th BD

Wow! And I thought I loved blackberries. We didn't have 5 acres by choice, tho. Our 7 acres was overrun by 3 different varieties growing wild, so we are trying to cut them back some. They are so prolific in the area that you can't give them away. I just need a few more hands to help pick!!! Come on down!
