Each duck is an individual with her own level of maternal instinct. I have seen runners drop and egg and keep walking, I have seen them lay an egg and then look down in surprise. I have seen them carefully gather eggs into a nest, I have seen them walk right over them.

My flock is - well - three or four of them are really hormonal right now. I heard a commotion, went downstairs and saw Elfie and Zwei (two of my sweetest ducks) sumo wrestling. sigh. It's like middle school in the duck room these days. Bean, the drake, and his buff girls were staying out of the middle of it, but a few of the runners seemed to be egging Elfie and Zwei on.
