Hey everyone! I'm new to this site, but have raised all types of livestock since I was a little kid. I am a college student from Georgia and love anything outdoors or agriculture related. I own a couple horses, goats, 8 grown chickens, some great little working farm dogs, a couple ducks, a temperamental turkey, and 16 chicks around a month old (6 of which are broilers, so Im excited to go through the learning process of harvesting them for the first time). I joined this site because I had a couple questions I needed some advice for.

My main question is...Are any of you allergic to chickens? I googled it, and thats how I found this site haha. But I couldn't figure out which section to post this question, so I thought I would just ask here. I have kept all kinds of different chicken breeds over the years, but never had any problems with allergies. I have never had Silkies before, but I had a friend that needed to get rid of a silkie rooster. I was excited because I wanted to get some silkies to hatch eggs, instead of dragging out the incubator all the time. So I was hoping to hatch out some crosses from him this fall, that might be broody for me next spring. Today I went to pick him up, and held him in my lap in a cardboard box on the way home. I took him out looked him over, and put him in his new quarantine area. About halfway home my throat started feeling scratchy, and now a few hours after picking him up I am sneezing nonstop and have a sore throat (same type of reaction I have always had to my horses, which I usually just ignore cause there is no way I am getting rid of them lol). But its just weird to me that a chicken would cause this kind of reaction? Do silkies have a different type of dander or feather than other chickens, so much that I could be allergic to just this breed? It just seemed kind of odd so I wanted to throw it out there lol. It might sound a little crazy hahaha.

The rest of my questions Ill try to find the right section to post them in. But just thought I would introduce myself :) Thanks everyone!

Could he possible have been sprayed with something that might be causing your sneezing?

Bless you!

I don't think so, the only other thing I can think of is they kept him and another silkie in a chicken tractor in a shaded wooded area. But after your comment, I am just now realizing he might have some type of pollen on him in all his fluff. That makes a lot more sense now that I think about it. So hopefully I am allergic to what is on him, and not actually him. Thank you! I am hoping that is what happened and you just helped me solve that mystery hahaha.

He might not like me after, but I will definitely try a bath tomorrow. Thanks!

He is a very mellow rooster, I put one old friendly hen in with him to keep him company and he was terrified of her. She would try to follow him around like she does with my others, and he would just walk away and show no signs of interaction. Usually a rooster his age would be all excited about a new girlfriend and try to flirt, but he doesn't really care lol.

Hope a bath clears things up for you with the new rooster.

Best of luck to you and thanks for joining us!

I went out and held him today...and NO sneezing!! YAY!!! I would have been heartbroken to be allergic to a breed I have wanted for such a long time, but everything's great now! He has even started to crow so I feel like he is settled in now.

So now for another question, if a silkie and a turken mix is a showgirl (I think?). A Cochin and silkie mix is a frizzle (maybe?). But what will happen if I raise silkie chicks off my regular hens? I have red stars, red rangers, leghorn Wyandotte mix, Rhode Island reds. What will they look like, a surprise lol? Will the chick hens grow up and inherit the broodiness of a silkie? Which mix of the breeds I have would give me a better chance of future broody hens? I haven't had one go broody in almost 6 years, so that's what I'm hoping for.

I am also going to try and order some good quality silkie hatching eggs online. Has anyone ever tried that with success? I know the hatch rate goes down dramatically, but no one really has any silkies in my area.
