Hey everyone! I'm new to this site, but have raised all types of livestock since I was a little kid. I am a college student from Georgia and love anything outdoors or agriculture related. I own a couple horses, goats, 8 grown chickens, some great little working farm dogs, a couple ducks, a temperamental turkey, and 16 chicks around a month old (6 of which are broilers, so Im excited to go through the learning process of harvesting them for the first time). I joined this site because I had a couple questions I needed some advice for.
My main question is...Are any of you allergic to chickens? I googled it, and thats how I found this site haha. But I couldn't figure out which section to post this question, so I thought I would just ask here. I have kept all kinds of different chicken breeds over the years, but never had any problems with allergies. I have never had Silkies before, but I had a friend that needed to get rid of a silkie rooster. I was excited because I wanted to get some silkies to hatch eggs, instead of dragging out the incubator all the time. So I was hoping to hatch out some crosses from him this fall, that might be broody for me next spring. Today I went to pick him up, and held him in my lap in a cardboard box on the way home. I took him out looked him over, and put him in his new quarantine area. About halfway home my throat started feeling scratchy, and now a few hours after picking him up I am sneezing nonstop and have a sore throat (same type of reaction I have always had to my horses, which I usually just ignore cause there is no way I am getting rid of them lol). But its just weird to me that a chicken would cause this kind of reaction? Do silkies have a different type of dander or feather than other chickens, so much that I could be allergic to just this breed? It just seemed kind of odd so I wanted to throw it out there lol. It might sound a little crazy hahaha.
The rest of my questions Ill try to find the right section to post them in. But just thought I would introduce myself
Thanks everyone!
