Hey I'm choosing which kind of chick to get Edit:(narrowed down to 4!)

My Australorps are great big, cuddly lap chickens. My barred rock are great pets - cuddly & make cute sounds. I also have a Turken who is right up there for a pat on the back, bless her homely heart.
My GLW & SLW are skittish. My Hamburgs WILL NOT BE TOUCHED - no way! Beautiful, but not "pets". Polish are goofballs, can't see well enough to know what's going on.
If your fantasy is to chill out in the coop with a chicken on your knee, go with some of the more pedestrian breeds. They are popular for a reason. And, besides, all chickens are PURDY!

I have to agree with the Light Brahmas... my little Charlotte is a chatterbox, and follows me everywhere.

If egg color interest you take a look a welsummers. Much easier to get and they lay a beautiful speckled dark egg. I got mine for Estes Hatchery

I know they weren't on your list but check into Delawares. They're great layers, friendly, not flighty and beautiful.

Delawares were originally on my list but something happened and I took them off. I don't remember why and I can't seem to find the reason but i do love them so far they seem like the sweetest birds and they are very lovely! They are white though! Is it extremely hard to keep white feathers clean?? Well hers what's left : Silver Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Red Star, Delawares, Light Brahmas, Cuckoo Marans.

The ones in Bold are really what's left of the original list and the others are ones i am researching.

I can't do the welsummers ,opa, because I will be getting my chicks from McMurray's Hatchery
and they don't carry the Welsummers! BOO! BOO! BOO!

Anyway, I love the Cuckoo Marans dark egg color, feather color & they are gentle.

The Delawares feather color and attitude is just lovely, as is the fact that they are normally quiet and very loving.

The Light Brahmas well they just sound great over all they have a great attitude they are BIG!
very pretty and quiet, gentle, easy to handle, great size, immune to cold weather, great BROWN eggs,
and still lay efficiently in cold weather!

Oh Yay! that's good! I just read a book on how to bathe chickens and it didn't seem that hard so those won't get booted off my list for that reason!

My SLW is very sweet. Follows me around the yard. Even when I'm on the lawn mower. I keep telling her she's a chicken- I don't think she believes me.

My Red-Sex links are called ISA Browns ( there are quite a few names for them). Also very sweet chickens. They stand on my feet when I'm digging for their worms

.
I would recommend both breeds.
