Hey I'm new...& confused!

I'm using a jar lid & a bottom part of a 2 litter soda bottle for water. I take it out when I go to bed so they don't drench their bedding... I'm a quick study lol only took one Immediate change of bedding. We tried using a shallow bowl for the feed but they didn't seem to know what it was but when we put some on the ground (my living room floor lol) they ate it right up.

Even with the commercial waterers I hated my chicken when they were young. They could seriously foul thier water in well under three hours. I really wish you the best but also would encourage you to visit the feed store to spend 8 dollars on a dedicated feed/water system for them. The flip side of that coin people have been raising chicken since at least 3500BC and without any of our advanced plastic making technology. As long as you are in your comfort zone you will probably master this ancient technology as well!

I think the $8 a Great upcoming investment!
I just wanted to clarify chicken are as difficult as kittens, pups or goldfish to raise. If you know you already have that skillset, you are set. The only thing that caught me by surprise was the needed butt checks on a daily basis. Mine arrived stressed having shipped in July across Texas. So I had two weeks of dealing with pasty butt until they were settled into their new routine. I am still so thrilled 100% survived until I culled 50%(all the roo's), as everything I had read suggested only 80% of the chicks would survive.

Culling might seem cruel but none of those roosters were pets they turned into real jerks and were attacking me so they were removed from my flock and I presently only have a sweet flock of hens. My hens are all pets they come up and tell me how they spent their night. If they had a good sleep or if a neighbor dog kept them awake all night. Oh yes they talk! They are cute most mornings unless I had too much to drink the night prior, but they are as affable as any dog I have ever owned.

G’Day from down under Lauren :frow Welcome and Congratulations! :clap

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These two might be of particular interest to you:
Topic/Question of the week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks
Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

If you would like to share more Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
