Hey I'm new...& confused!

Since I've found several dead (& chewed on) regular birds in the backyard over the years, I just assume they'll be chicken eaters too. Thus why I've got the chicks in a "non-dog" bedroom at night. I've actually got rid of the heat lamp since they're doing fine with a warm ambient room temp. During the day, I let them have the run of the living room (Supervised!) & I have the lamp over by the table for a Hot Spot. They rarely go to it tho. I asked the ppl at the place where we got them from & they said they're between 5-7weeks old so probably 6-8weeks old now. I'm definitely investing in the Hardware Cloth for the run. I'm also making sure it's covered too.

I've got a large dog crate, totally wire, that I am wanting to put them in so I can take them outside. The holes are kinda big tho so I wanted to ask advice first! Thx!
When my chicks come in in the next two weeks that is exactly the home they will have. A Dog crate with hay and a heat pad attached to a feed barrel. It all sits in a rain free area under my "car port" I don;t know if it is really a car port when it is built with hurricane fittings into a concrete footer.

I use a large dog crate as one of my hospital areas. I lost a bird to a very smart hawk, had I not seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed it. This was a small hawk, not sure what kind, but it perched on top of the crate and dropped cracked corn about 3" out of reach for the chicken. Yup, she stuck her head out between the bars trying to get the corn and the hawk took her head. Birds of prey are quite smart and apparently creative. The hawk took the head back to her nest and then came back expecting a meal, but I had already removed the carcass so momma got to go hungry that night.

Cool story. I would expect that from a crow but not a hawk! Wonder where it learned that trick?
