Oh nice! Eventually I want to get into making my own breed for home use not to sell, but right now we are just trying to hatch them according to their breed. I do have some mixes but not by choice.
What are you looking for in a breed? If I ever hatch specific chicks I want a good layer that is beautiful and possibly some meat on them. I have White Leghorns but I am just tired of the plain white color, no offense to them.
At this stage I am mixing the Plymouth (not great layers, but have a LOT of weight but they tend to not make it past 6 weeks , but I got mine past that stage so I have 5 hens ) with Orpingtons (great layers but not a lot of weight , but they're hardy so they live long) haha I also devide mine by colour , I have a pen full of only white Orpingtons and Plymouths, and 4 pens for my incubated chicks with their adopted moms, another pen for my show chickens and another for a mix between them all
They litterally eat themselves to death , they get heart attacks because they get too fat .. and my chickens are all free range , so that's saying something about this breed haha .Oh nice! What do you mean they don’t live past 6 weeks? Predators get them? Or they get too big to function?
I just bought a couple more pens so I’ll be separating a good majority of my chickens by breed, but if nothing else by color for sure.
I have two or three Australorp cockerels, I am gonna try to keep one if one is nice enough. Their dad was a major meanie from the day we got him as a chick, but I haven’t seen any aggression toward humans at 6 weeks with these so we’ll see.
