Hey ladies, it's a nesting box...

I've had 6 nesting boxes for 20 chickens and always found 90 percent of the eggs in one nesting box so I made room in the coop and took 3 out and now I find 90 percent of the eggs in one nesting box still, they've never laid eggs in all three boxes in the same day. I also close up the coop every night and sometimes poke my head in to see where they are all roosting and notice a few heads poking out of a nesting box so I decided to nudge them out of the boxes, those are for laying eggs not sleeping in I told them, as I nudged them out I counted 6.

Looks like a slumber party!

I have 8 hens and 4 nests, I keep 2 golf balls in each nest all the time.....they seem to mix up where they lay, but I've never seen any waiting in line or doubling up.....tho my nests are not really conducive to sharing as they have 10 inch round openings.

Day 1 of the nesting box additions saw two eggs in the favorite box, and one each in the new boxes.
Day 2 saw only two eggs laid, one each in the original boxes.
So far on Day 3 - two in the favorite, one in the other original box.

So, yeah

Day 4 - two in the popular box, two in the other original box. Lower/new boxes had fresh shavings and were undisturbed.

I think my chickens have found the Internet and BYC...they know I'm keeping track of the nesting box situation. Day 5 - two in the popular box...two in the lower left (new) box, and both bottom boxes had seen fuzzy bums jostling the shavings. I give up!
