OUR first chick from our own eggs! Just hatched this morning and resting on its "cousins" who hatch Friday. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/17059_our_first_mfc_baby.jpg
Jeanne
is a Grandma! The MFC roo is working hard.
I think this baby is out of my blue mottled hen though, its looking gray colored with white. YAHHOOOO! So thrilling....
We have friends from Kansas City and their kids visiting...the kids are fascinated with hens/chicks in the backyard. This hatching will be icing on the cake when they wake up this morning....

I'll PM you regarding quilts....

Josh, that's great to know about the darker ones because I don't have enough birds to get really picky and this particular bird is showing the nicer type straight out of the shoot. He has a fuller cushion and a lot more tail feathers and his face is darling... can you tell I have a soft spot for him

I'll post some updated pics of him as soon as I find my camera cord and also some great pics taken this morning of my babies.

Patty, You've been hatching like crazy haven't you? Can't wait to see pics of the babies. What are your down colors? I've been seeing a lot of chipmunk, reds, buffs and blondes.. that looks like the right direction. And, I would definitely hang on to that porcelain!! You can start a whole new frenzy.

Danny and Doc, I probably don't wait that long but am always leaning toward letting the chick try to find its way out. This time, I was not so patient. I watched 3 milles die in the shell... fully developed last time and I wasn't going to let it happen again. I want to make this clear, all the shipped eggs I've received are from healthy, strong stock. It is the shipping that inhibits the hatching of some eggs. I think everyone hear understands what we're talking about but I want any lurkers to know we aren't talking about defective chicks... just chicks that have been through rough travels via our postal system

Danny, I never knew that about the defects but it does make sense. I helped two late rosecombs last time and both had defects. One had a bulging eye?? and one was just super weak. The weak one died two days later and the one with the bulging eye appears to be doing well at 3 wks and the eye is no longer abnormal looking and has regained all of its color. I guess it's all up to the person doing the hatching to try to determine when its time to interveine.

Sackman, look at all those eggs!!! Happy Hatching.

I haven't perfected the day old photo-op yet but Im just happy I got some clear pics.
I have three that are yellow with various shades of buff/red in patches on the back and 1 that is chipmunked. I really love the chipmunk babies... just soooo squeezable

CUTE chicks Msbear you are getting some beauties!
Everyone loves to see pictures of chicks so here is a few of my latest ones. The eleven chicks I hatched from Lynne's eggs are now four months old and I can hardly wait to be able to cross them with the breeding these chicks are, plus another line I have. Lynne's birds have such awesome foot feathers, hope they will pass this feathering to their offspring.

Oh, Tina, I'm so sorry about your flock and your poor, darn dog. Hugs to you across the miles and kind wishes for the eggs that are on their way from Lynne.

Everyone who is posting chick pics, you are simply torturing me!
I finally have a broody hen, I think,

so maybe soon...
A few folks have been graciously incubating and brooding some of my first F3 eggs and I'm learning what it is like to be a long-distance grandma!

I promised Erin some Colorado springtime photos awhile back (though now it is kind of "spring-into-summer" here). In lieu of not having any chick photos to share...sigh...here goes:

Tbird,

Your babies are adorable. Glad the ones from my eggs are shaping up for you. I have to agree that the feather footing is super. Isn't this the best project??!!!
