I'll agree with you. I wonder what it would have been like if they had let the Confederacy secede. Did the South have any natural resources besides cotton and some other crops? I know they have some oil, but back then oil wasn't a valuable commodity yet. What would they have done for an income source since all the industry was in the North?

Well they were making a ton selling cotton and sugar to Britain so I suppose they would keep doing that. They did have a fair amount of oil, in the gulf and gas in Texas. Industry would be a problem, they could have made some factories, but with the decline in slavery there would be nobody to work them... Although a majority of the population didn't have slaves, slavery was a big money maker... It was declining so they would have had to put more focus on industry... If they were separate we would have two weak nations, but together you have a superpower...

That's exactly my point. Might and power will always win. But it DOES NOT MAKE RIGHT. Sure, the Union won the war. But that does NOT mean that the CSA wasn't a legitimate country. It was a fully legitimate country, fighting for it's life against another country who wanted to destroy it.

FYI, that's not a civil war. It's also not a "war between the states." It wasn't even merely a war of northern aggression. It was a war for independence and freedom from the oppressive rule of the Washington bureaucrats who were turning the united STATES into a bungling, oppressive democracy and methodically stamping out the rights of the individual states to rule their citizens as the elected representatives of the people in that state saw fit.

Yep:)

I have to laugh in a sad way about this post. Comments like..

war between the states

war of northern aggression

This post makes the most sense

Sorry guys the South lost. Don't feel so bad. You weren't there, nothing you can do about it

But you know what it's really about?

This, and not ONE of those headstones is worth the price. To all those debating here on this post how many put on a uniform and were prepared to do what it takes for others to debate about it?

I did

You know Steve. You were there and there wasn't anything you could do about what went on. Soldiers are just pawns of the powerful. I don't know if you were drafted or if you enlisted. I do know that I'm real happy it was over by the time I was 18. I was born in 58. Only someone that's been in war can really comment on it.

Freedom is not worth even a single death? Is that what you are saying? If so, I'm sure glad that the founding fathers of this country did not share that view.

Or is it worth dying for only when there is a reasonable hope of success? Before the revolutionary war there wasn't much of a chance at all that a bunch of rag-tag patriots could defeat Great Britain, the most powerful country on earth at the time. And yet I highly doubt that anyone here would question the fact that those who died in the revolutionary war did not die in vain.

The question begs to be asked: what was the difference? At what point does freedom become worth dying for?

I think that freedom (we're talking the stereotypical, Americal definition, right?) is worth some deaths. However, those giving their lives need to know what the chances of death are, and that they would be dying for REAL freedom.

TM: That just may be your best signature EVER.

Anyone that hasn't served in actual combat conditions shouldn't really have an opinion on that issue. Even someone that has lost a loved one can't really comment on it. Nobody wants to lose a loved one in combat and admit that they died for no real reason.

I'm glad to know that my opinion doesn't matter.
I suppose that males shouldn't comment on abortion, either, and whites have nothing to say about discrimination against blacks.
