Hey hey! Super excited to be here! ❤Thought I'd introduce myself, incase people still read these types of things!

My name is Sarah, and I'm a full time remote worker for a publishing platform who dabbles in web development for fun.. and raising chickens!

I am a long time chicken fan, and after several years of begging, my husband finally allowed me to purchase 6 lovely little ladies! We have 3 Bantam hens and 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte hens. There was no rhyme or reason for which type we got (other than T&S had them in stock) -- my kids wanted the Bantams, and I personally wanted the Wyandotte hens because they are soooo pretty. Note: We go through about 24 eggs a week on average between baking and breakfast, so it was only a matter of time before owning chickens became financially acceptable by my husband's standards. 😂

We are currently located in Jackson, Michigan, so we have some pretty rough winters every now and then. I imagine I'll be picking everyone's brain behind coop design and winterizing. Right now we've expanded a smaller coop we used for our bunnies to house the hens, but we'll hopefully be expanding it further when the weather warms up. This is what we've got so far:

Coop + 25ft run out in front of our garden.

Our chickens are about ~6/7 weeks old currently, and we just moved them out to the coop this week, which we've outfitted with one of those Cozy Coop heaters for the few nights it gets chilly -- we did start acclimating them to the current weather about a week and a half ago, and so far they seem happy!

Anyway - super happy to be here and learn from everyone else!

Hello, Sarah, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Yikes, that coop is tiny! It would house three bantams but not three bantams plus three LF chickens. And the run is non-existant.
You are going to need to start building a proper coop and run right away as you are going to run into trouble with that set up sooner than later.

Coop is temporary at the moment, I promise!! We are building out a larger one if the weather can cooperate. :) Will post pictures as soon as it's complete for feedback! As for the run, it's lined with long metal stakes, every 4 metal squares on every side (about 100+), but will be redesigned when the new coop is in place to encompass that entire area.

Welcome to BYC, and good luck with your flock. My gut is that hawks in particular will harass your birds in that run set up.

Will definitely keep that in mind for our redesign! I've not actually seen a hawk in the area since we've moved here. Same with other animals actually now that I think of it. The only constant wildlife I've ever seen here are two Sandhill Cranes that continue to visit daily (the past 5 years).
