Hey ya'll I'm back!

what is a chinook?
A chinook is a warming wind that can elevate temps precipitously in the space of a few moments, often creating thermal shock. People have had their windshields shatter, etc. It's awfully hard on plate glass windows, too. Nice though, to lose the cold so quickly.

We had a ‘tiny minor kind of chinook’ here too. Last Sunday it was freezing cold 🥶 I even went iceskating ⛸. Monday it started to rain, it froze immediately after hitting the ground and the roads became dangerous and too icy to go anywhere.
The wind turned from north to south and today it’s 15C warmer.
My chickens didn’t want to come out of their coop as long as the snow covered the run and garden. But today it all melted and they were glad to scratch the soil again.

How in the world for you northerners deal with this icy cold white crap regularly?

I hate frozen waterers.
We have to deal with it every year so we are always prepared. There are heated waterers and I also use my bury the bucket in manure method. When it was -17°F, I had an 1/8" of ice on top that I would break up and skim off in the mornings. The poultry would keep the water open the rest of the day.

I can promise you I will be prepared for next year when this disaster happens again.

The reason this really gets people is that these events are typically considered 100 year events. It really is not normal for this to be happening to you.

I visited Arizona in the spring when they had a 100 year event in back to back years as the Salt River (normally dry) flooded both years.
