I always keep a Speckled Sussex or two around, they are friendly, nosy, active, and pretty good layers too. My Euskal Oiloa (Basques) have also been friendly birds, and are also good layers, as well as being cold and heat tolerant.

We have Australorps and Barred Rocks... Our girls and 1 rooster have awesome personalities and are as friendly as can be. We got them when they were only a day old and were handled lots. Both are great layers.
