Getting ready to embark upon my first backyard chicken adventure. My daughter and I are planning on converting the treehouse that she is outgrowing into a chicken coop. We are still in the planning and searching stage. We heard silkies were a good type of chicken to look for. We live in Oakland. Thanks for having us in your backyard chicken community and nice to meet you all :)

Welcome to BYC community.
The conversion of a treehouse to coop is an ideal pretty option.
I have a LiL Tykes Plastic playhouse that I converted to coop.
I only keep chickens as pets. No roosters ether. Not allowed in my area.
Ask anything you need to know. There is a whole community here willing to help, with knowledge, and advice.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

If you are taking the tree house out of the tree it would be a good start to a new coop.
However, you need to consider the following:
How will you manage cleaning out the coop in a tree?
How will you manage hauling up bedding in a tree?
How will you manage retrieving a chicken from the coop that is in a tree? They will need routine and non-routine treatment from time to time and the easiest way to catch them is to take them off the roost at night. I personally would not want to have to climb down a tree holding a chicken.
How will a broody hen and her brood or future replacement chicks get in and out of the coop in a tree?
And you are planning on Silkies. Silkies are the 'groundest' type of chickens I can think of! They are terrible flyers. You would need a multi-level ramp for them to use a coop in a tree.
