Hello everyone!
I ended up here when I was doing a search on bloody comb. Anyway, I wanted to say Hi and tell you all a bit about myself. Me and my husband live out in the boonies in north central Arkansas with five cats, two dogs and eight hens. I bought our chickens as chicks from Tractor Supply over a year ago. We have four Buff Orpingtons, one Amberlink, and three California Whites. We've had chickens off and on for about 17 years. This is my first experience with Amberlinks and Cal. Whites. I had three more Amberlinks and three more Whites but sold them last spring as we did not need that many chickens and their house was overcrowded. We built a six by four chicken house soon after we moved here in 2000 and keep it maintained by giving it a paint job when it needs it. My husband is a contract employee and works when he can find a job (not easy today) and I am a stay at home gal. We enjoy gardening and selling produce at the local farmer's market during the growing months. Just enjoying the heat from our woodstove on this cold evening. I probably said too much already. Anyway, nice to see others interested in poultry raising and other similar shared interests.

:welcome:celebrate

Glad you're here!

If you haven't yet, please make your poultry a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise.
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it! :D

During this winter, please make sure you have bag balm, Vaseline or the like. The frostbite is nippin at everyones chickens it seems.

Welcome to Backyard chickens!
It sounds like you have a very nice mix of animals

Hi Smuvers Farm, Miss Misty Real, ronott 1 and 007Sean! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Trying to quote you Smuvers Farm on your comment about the first aid kit. I probably messed up as I'm not familiar with the functions at this forum yet. But, good tip! I had the Vaseline thought in my mind of late as we are supposed to dip down to the single digits and I am concerned especially for the Cal. White's large combs. Vaseline makes a good insulator from the cold. And yep, their house has good ventilation and a fresh layer of straw down. Enjoyed time with you all. Will check out the forum more when I have more time to do so, especially about my hen with the bloody comb and how I think I solved the mystery.

G’Day from down under Lisa :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. There are a couple on winter and chickens that you might find interesting.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes for the New Year!
