Picked up my first chicks today. I have no Idea what sex they are though. I got 6. I was told that they are wydonnettes and wydonnett mixes. But the guy wasnt sure about that either. Oh well Its alaska and Farm type animals arent really what we do. They are 3 and half weeks old and seem very heallthy. THere was no adjustment period with them. As Soon as i got them home, they dug right into their food and water. The goal with these chickens is to have some layers as well as yard pets. My grandparents always had chickens and I really liked them. they were fun to watch and have around. Ill soon post pics of my coop in progress. Right now chicks are in a box in the spare bathroom with a heatlamp so not much to see there! My wife thinks Im crazy but she seems to have mellowed out some aready:D My 2 year old is thrilled!

Not to correct you but rather to teach...those are Wyandottes. Good for you for getting them! You will get loads of enjoyment from them

Hi from Palmer!
There are lots of Alaskan chicken owners on here. You will get addicted, once you see how easy they really are, and you start getting the eggs...
I started out with six Buff Orpingtons two years ago, now I am working on 20 chickens of assorted breeds.
Sadly a dog got into my coop a few weeks ago and killed all but 4 of my hens, so I'm now starting over with chicks.
Of the four left,
two are Gold Laced Cochins, standard size not bantam. I love their feathered feet.
The other two are Light Brahmas, also a feathered foot variety and they have pea combs that make them ideal for Alaskas cold.

In my brooder I have three Blue Orpingtons that I drove to Sterling to get from another couple of BYC members, Ak Bird Brain and Mrs. AK Bird Brain, they own Sterling Meadow Hatchery.
One Ameraucana (tinted egg layer) also from Sterling.
Two Wellsumers,
three EEs (Easter Eggers)
two Golden Comets
and two Light Brahmas

and in my incubator..

Six Black Copper Marans eggs I got from MissDeb, also a BYC member.

I am hoping to get Blue Laced Red Wyandottes eventually.

Yikes, it looks alot worse when it's all typed out like that
