hey everyone!
so here's the deal. We just bought this awesome property in a small village called Foxboro, just north of Belleville. Well, apparently it actually IS part of Belleville, but we're calling it Foxboro cause that sounds cooler, lol. Our land is just shy of 6 acres, backing onto a river (the Moira for those of you familiar with the area) We have neighbours with horses, and donkeys, and there is for sure a rooster nearby! There are also sheep across the street, and turkeys galore.
We want chickens. Real bad. I have contacted the city requesting information on their bylaws, but keep getting the runaround. I was informed that they are sure we can own horses, donkeys and mule, but as for chickens, i keep getting passed on to other people, who also seem unable to fulfill my request. I was told that _maybe_ we can NOT have chickens, as per the city bylaws (which they would not forward me a copy of) but that we may in fact be under the old county's bylaws (pre amalgamation), but nobody seems to want to tell me what those bylaws are :/
I know there are members here from the same area... hoping one of you can help me out!
our property is zoned HZ (hazard, because of flood waters from the river) and R1 (rural 1). The other side of our road is zoned R2.
anyways... do any of you fine chicken enthusiast have any suggestions on how to go about figuring out if we can or can not raise chickens? We only want 4 at the most, no roosters, and only for the eggs. We already have a fine building in place to house them (the previous owner's magnificent tractor shed, all it needs is a door) The building is away from neighbour's, well insulated, clean, perfect.
I can't believe how incredibly complicated this has been! I am so close to saying to heck with them all! and getting the chickens regardless of the bylaws, but would much rather do it the right way.
