Hi, what a great place.
First time chicken mama. I am 62 years old, married, settled down in Kansas almost 5 years ago and got 4 laying hens about 2 months ago.
From what I can tell, we have a Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, Easter Egger, and either a black Orpington or Australorp - not sure which she is.
I love having chickens. I love their personalities. We were getting ready for a bit of a (short-lived) storm last night and I was closing up one of the coop ventilation doors to keep rain out. They were all perched up snug and I was overwhelmed at how sweet they were and found myself saying "I love you" like they were children being tucked in for the night. LOL
I moved back to this area to help take care of my elderly dad who passed away two years ago. Hubby and I bought a wonky little house in a small town with almost 3/4 acres. I also take care of him because he has chronic fatigue. I work at a school and do a lot of foraging, make plant medicines and teas, and make a lot of hand stitching projects and do mending. I'm doing a lot of miniature dollhouse linens and textiles right now. I'm very high functioning autistic so I tend to get bogged down in details sometimes. I love being home and would love to be self-sufficient for the most part on our little property.
BYC came up in Google search a lot when I'd have chicken questions. I decided today to join.
These are my ladies in their chicken tractor.
