G'day all

Hi Neil,

Welcome to BYC! A great place to talk chicken! I have never bought at auction, but from what other members posted, you may not necessarily get what you thought you were getting (in terms of breed, gender or health). Maybe you could go along with someone who keeps chickens? You could alternatively try the "where are you" forum and see if there are other BYCers in your area - they may point you in the right direction to buy chickens or even have some chickens for sale?

Whatever you decide, i am sure you are looking forward to getting your chickens - enjoy the experience - its addictive!

All the best

Indeed, be careful about auctions, as a lot of unethical people tend to dump their sick/contagious animals there, as well as cockerels (young males that are difficult for amateurs to identify as such).

Welcome to BYC! :)

I will be careful ... I think I will have a chat with some locals there and only purchase if I get good feedback from several people

Thank you

Hi again ... well we went to several places today and as others warned us against buying from an auction we found a great little place at Kincumber. We purchased 2 hens a black Barter and a brown Barter.

I had never heard of either but they look great and should be family friendly and good layers. A google search provided the following information:

http://kensingtonproduce.com.au/collections/chickens-for-sale-sydney/products/barter-brown-chicken

http://kensingtonproduce.com.au/collections/chickens-for-sale-sydney/products/australorp

If anyone has any extra info on these girls please let me know

thank you

Congratulations and welcome to the world of chicken keeping!! How long will it be before your 2 hens become 4, 6, 8 etc. i wonder?
